Standard Lithium's Franklin Blueprint: 70,000 Tonnes of Capacity, Zero Capex Figures

Franklin's economic assessment models up to 70,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually but omits capex and price assumptions, and stops short of a feasibility decision.

Standard Lithium has widened its development pipeline with a second major project, but the technical report underpinning Franklin in East Texas leaves the most financially consequential questions unanswered. The preliminary economic assessment, filed with SEDAR+ roughly a week before the company's latest market update, models up to 70,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually over a 20-year operating life. Production is pencilled in for the early 2030s.

That capacity figure describes a proposed project concept, not output already flowing. And the study itself recommends moving to a pre-feasibility stage — it explicitly stops short of a final investment decision. Media reports noted the disclosure omitted both the lithium price assumptions and the capital expenditure, offering only a pre-tax net present value. That gap matters: a modelled NPV cannot sensibly be separated from the inputs behind it, and a headline tonnage says nothing on its own about the capital required or the economics that must support it. None of this proves the project uneconomic. It does argue against valuing Franklin off a single output metric.

A Contract Book That Keeps Growing — On Paper

Offtake arrangements tell a similar story of optionality rather than obligation. In a mandatory disclosure on 16 October, Standard Lithium detailed an amended purchase agreement between Smackover Lithium and Trafigura that lets the partnership elect to deliver up to 4,000 additional tonnes a year. Exercising that option would lift Trafigura's maximum annual offtake to 12,000 tonnes. Including LG Energy Solution, total potential offtake commitments reach 20,000 tonnes a year — though the extra Trafigura volumes remain discretionary, with no requirement to fill the maximum.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Standard Lithium?

Chief executive David Park addressed the direct lithium extraction process and the Smackover region in a conversation published on 22 October from the Benchmark Summit, where he appeared alongside Adam Webb.

The Market's Verdict

Shares slipped 0.9% on the day of the report. A market commentary the previous Wednesday pointed to no single confirmed catalyst behind the broader moves in lithium equities and cited no company-specific trigger for Standard Lithium. For investors, the distinction that should frame the stock is the distance between project scale and investment readiness: Franklin documents a development step, not the completion of an economic review. The pre-feasibility work the study recommends will say more about whether the plan becomes a viable venture than any isolated capacity number.
