SpaceX Spectrum Grab Sends Deutsche Telekom Sharply Lower as FCC Review Looms

Deutsche Telekom shareholders woke up to a rude surprise on Friday, as the Bonn-based carrier's stock tumbled on news that had nothing to do with its own operations. A land grab in the U.S. airwaves market by Elon Musk's SpaceX has investors reassessing the competitive threat facing T-Mobile US, the group's profit engine across the Atlantic.
The shares fell 7.4% to EUR 25.03, giving back a chunk of Thursday's close of EUR 27.04. Other market data put the decline at 8.7%, with the stock changing hands at EUR 24.69. Either way, it marked one of the sharpest single-day drops for Europe's largest telecoms group in recent memory.
A Spectrum Deal That Hasn't Closed Yet
At the center of the selloff is SpaceX's agreement to acquire a nationwide 800-MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management, spanning up to 14 MHz of paired airwaves. Reuters and dpa-AFX reported that the move has stoked fears of fresh competition from satellite-based services under the Starlink Mobile banner — a would-be rival to T-Mobile US that could challenge established network economics.
Crucially, the transaction remains subject to final approval from the Federal Communications Commission. That regulatory hurdle is where the real story lies: without the FCC's blessing, Starlink Mobile cannot commercially deploy the acquired spectrum for mobile services. Should the agency sign off, an aggressive price war for subscribers could follow. Should it balk, or attach onerous conditions, the feared assault on the U.S. business stays hypothetical for now.
Europe as the Counterweight
Against that American cloud, Deutsche Telekom's home-market story looks steadier. At its AI Investor Day in Bonn on Monday, management reaffirmed both its full-year guidance and its medium-term targets. Outside the U.S., the company expects roughly EUR 1.1 billion in gross savings by 2027 versus 2023, driven by artificial intelligence and automation. By 2030, indirect costs are targeted to fall by about EUR 2.5 billion compared with 2023 levels.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Infrastructure spending is proceeding on schedule, too. Deutsche Telekom holds orders from the real estate sector covering seven million residential units for fiber connections, with EUR 800 million in additional investment planned over the next three years. In early October, the group also secured the network infrastructure of ruhrfibre Essen and Metrofibre, adding roughly 87,000 homes to its footprint.
Analysts have largely kept the faith. Goldman Sachs trimmed its price target to EUR 38 from EUR 40 on Monday but maintained a "Buy" rating. UBS stayed at "Buy" on Tuesday with a EUR 35.10 target.
Why the U.S. Exposure Matters So Much
The crux of the investor anxiety is Deutsche Telekom's 54% majority stake in T-Mobile US, which has served for years as the group's principal growth driver and a major contributor to consolidated earnings. If SpaceX uses satellite technology to poach price-sensitive customers, margins in the high-profit U.S. segment would come under pressure.
A sustained price war stateside would hit Deutsche Telekom's earnings momentum hard. Even a flourishing cost-reduction program and the German fiber buildout would struggle to fully offset a lasting profitability decline in North America. That fear of eroding customer revenue explains the ferocity of the market reaction.
Two Dates That Will Shape the Narrative
Investors now face a binary setup. As long as the FCC's antitrust and media review drags on and U.S. operating metrics hold steady, underlying earnings power should support the stock at its discounted level. But if the regulator leans toward SpaceX and a rapid Starlink Mobile network launch comes into view, further valuation correction is likely.
Clarity on the current business trajectory arrives in a matter of weeks. On November 5, 2026, Deutsche Telekom will publish its financial results for the third quarter of 2026 — a date that will reveal just how resilient day-to-day operations are on both sides of the Atlantic.
