SpaceX posts strong Q1 with $7.8B revenue and 12M Starlink subs, but market eyes Thursday's $116B insider share unlock, the largest in history.

The numbers were supposed to be the story. They weren't.

SpaceX delivered a blowout debut quarterly report on Tuesday — revenue of $7.8 billion against Wall Street's $6.8 billion consensus, a net loss narrowed to $541 million from $1 billion a year earlier, and a Starlink subscriber base that has doubled to 12 million paying customers in just 12 months. The stock responded with a 9.46% jump to €108.80, a sharp rebound from the €91.04 52-week low touched just a day earlier.

Yet for all the strength in the fundamentals, the market's attention is fixed on what happens Thursday. That's when a lock-up period expires, freeing up to 911.5 million insider shares — roughly $116 billion worth of equity — in what stands as the largest single share-release event in financial history.

A Short Bet Bigger Than Tesla

The positioning ahead of this week has been extraordinary. Short interest in SpaceX has climbed to 219.3 million shares, or about $24.6 billion — a bearish wager that now exceeds the short position on Tesla, Elon Musk's other publicly traded vehicle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

Sam Pierson, research director at S3 Partners, argues the bearish trade was never really about the earnings print. The bet, he says, is that no news could possibly absorb the sheer volume of shares about to hit the market. Options pricing reflects that anxiety: traders have priced in a post-earnings move of roughly 14%, implying a range of about $94 to $126 from current levels.

The analyst community is deeply split on what comes next. Phillip Securities' Glenn Thum initiated coverage with a "Sell" rating and a $75 price target, arguing the valuation rests on an AI business that doesn't yet justify it — the division generated $3.2 billion in revenue in 2025 but posted an operating loss of $6.4 billion. Bernstein counters with an outperform call and a $239 target, insisting Starship remains the key valuation driver alongside semiconductor access, regulatory approvals, and compute capacity.

Three Businesses, Three Trajectories

SpaceX now reports across three segments — Space, Connectivity, and AI — and they tell very different stories. Connectivity, led by Starlink, is the only division running consistently profitable. It grew 66% to $4.3 billion in the quarter, while the AI unit contributed $2.6 billion.

The subscriber metrics show both momentum and pressure. Starlink ended the first quarter with 10.3 million subscribers — more than double the 5 million from a year earlier — and has since pushed past 12 million. But average revenue per user has slid from $86 to $66 per month year-over-year, a trend that bears watching as competition intensifies.

CFO Bret Johnsen highlighted the company's liquidity position: $100 billion in cash and marketable securities at quarter's end, against an order backlog of $47.5 billion. The capital intensity, however, is staggering. SpaceX invested $18.4 billion during the quarter, and the Zacks consensus had expected roughly $12.94 billion in capex for Q2 against adjusted EBITDA of about $2.10 billion — meaning planned investments run more than six times operating profit.

Starship's Next Milestone and a Mobile Push

On the operational front, Musk is already looking past the successful 13th Starship flight in July, when the vehicle's heat shield proved its resilience for the first time. The 14th integrated flight test is slated for late August 2026, with the goal of deploying the first operational Starlink Version 3 satellites. SpaceX also plans a "tower catch" — recovering the upper stage directly at the launch tower in Starbase, Texas — which would mark a major step toward full reusability.

President and COO Gwynne Shotwell confirmed the company has hit 49 milestones under its NASA Human Landing System contract, preparing for the Artemis III mission.

The company also announced a strategic pivot into terrestrial mobile services, using 65 MHz of spectrum acquired from EchoStar. Rather than traditional cell towers, SpaceX plans small stations linked to Starlink antennas. The first compatible satellites are expected to launch next year, with commercial service targeted for late 2027 — a direct challenge to established carriers offering 5G and satellite-to-phone connectivity. Thousands of satellites are slated for deployment by 2028.

The Real Test Begins Thursday

Pierson notes a quirk of the short trade: those holding positions into next week currently pay slightly elevated stock-loan fees, after which borrowing should become significantly easier. The surge in bearish bets signals widespread expectations of selling pressure once the lock-up lifts.

With annualized volatility at 58%, this remains a stock for strong nerves. The shares still sit more than 44% below their June record of €194.46, and the gap between the €108.80 close and that peak underscores how much ground the bears have already claimed.

The earnings beat provides some cushion. Whether it's enough to absorb the largest share unlock in market history is the question that will define the next several trading sessions. Meanwhile, an unrelated spectacle unfolds Wednesday: a burned-out Falcon 9 upper stage is scheduled to deliberately crash into the lunar surface as part of a scientific experiment — a reminder that with SpaceX, the extraordinary has become routine.
