SpaceX Lands $946 Million NASA Boost as Triple Launch Showcases Industrial-Scale Operations

A trio of rocket launches completed in under 13 hours has given SpaceX investors plenty to cheer about, but the company's growing backlog of government contracts may be the more durable story. Shares climbed 7.2% on Friday to close at €141.20, with the advance unfolding against a broader market lift as weaker U.S. employment data eased interest-rate concerns and drew buyers back into risk assets.
The stock now trades roughly 17% above its 50-day moving average, a level that reflects mounting confidence in SpaceX's transformation from speculative venture to industrial operator.
Three Missions, One Day
Thursday's flight cadence told the story better than any earnings call could. A Falcon 9 carried the Crew-13 mission toward the International Space Station, a rideshare flight dubbed Transporter-18 lofted 130 payloads, and a Falcon Heavy handled the NROL-97 cargo assignment for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office — the first such mission for that agency aboard the heavy-lift vehicle.
Among the Transporter-18 payloads was an AI satellite built for Google's Project Suncatcher. The manifest underscores a shift in how commercial and specialized customers approach launch: rather than waiting years for a slot, they can now book what amounts to scheduled transport corridors.
Market participants cited the compressed timeline as the clearest evidence yet of SpaceX's industrial maturity, according to media reports.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?
NASA Doubles Down
Washington's checkbook has followed the operational track record. On September 18, NASA added $946 million to its existing contract for crewed ISS flights, covering three additional astronaut missions. That brings the agreement's total value to $5.92 billion across 17 missions, with the program running through 2030.
The arrangement gives investors a predictable revenue stream — the kind of baseline that funds riskier development work. SpaceX's Falcon program has evolved from a gamble into a highly profitable workhorse whose utilization is locked in for years.
Capacity expansion is already in motion. The FAA recently opened preliminary reviews for a supplemental environmental assessment at Cape Canaveral, where SpaceX intends to conduct as many as 76 annual launches and 152 landings of its Starship-Super Heavy system at the SLC-37 complex.
Starship's Engine Problem Won't Stay Quiet
The Falcon fleet's reliability stands in contrast to the challenges facing SpaceX's next-generation vehicle. Starship's 14th test flight on Monday reached orbit and deployed 26 Starlink satellites, but an early engine shutdown cut the mission short by several hours.
Reuters reported Tuesday that the engine failure could complicate NASA's planning for crewed lunar landings. Starship is one of two vehicles competing to put astronauts on the lunar surface as early as 2028.
That timeline is where the real fault line sits. Routine Falcon missions generate dependable cash, yet the company's outsized growth expectations rest on Starship delivering on schedule. Each orbital engine anomaly raises pressure from government customers and rattles the 2028 target.
What the Rally Is Really Pricing
The triple-launch feat offers welcome confirmation of SpaceX's current market power, and the NASA billions provide a cushion against near-term volatility. Still, the jump in the share price shouldn't be read as a green light for an unchecked rally.
Whether the Starship engine issue gets resolved quickly — or whether NASA's lunar program timeline starts to slip — will shape the next few months. Until a credible fix emerges, the ambitious vehicle remains a wildcard. Investors betting on the space pioneer are paying for today's momentum with the risk of meaningful delays to the next rocket generation.
