SpaceX Balances Starship Countdown Against a Wave of Newly Tradeable Shares

SpaceX is preparing for one of its most ambitious technical demonstrations to date while simultaneously absorbing a mechanical shift in its share structure — two developments that pulled the stock in opposite directions during a busy stretch for the company.
Starship Flight 14 Cleared for Orbital Attempt
The centerpiece of the coming days is Starship Flight 14, slated for tomorrow. For the first time, the company intends to send the upper stage on an orbital trajectory while deploying 26 third-generation Starlink satellites in the same mission. Ground crews completed a full fueling test with the mega-rocket on Thursday and declared the vehicle ready for launch. A day earlier, Ship 41 and booster Super Heavy B21 had been mated using the launch tower's lifting apparatus.
A clean run would widen the envelope for heavy-payload and orbital-deployment missions, reinforcing the rocket system's role in future high-mass transport work.
Government Business Keeps Its Rhythm
Flight operations have stayed busy well beyond the test campaign. On September 19, SpaceX lifted 27 Starlink satellites into orbit from the California coast, steadily expanding its broadband mega-constellation. The day before that, the company flew mission USSF-385 for the U.S. Space Force — its third national-security launch this month, a cadence that underscores its reliability on sensitive government assignments.
Institutional revenue is deepening as well. Roughly a week ago, NASA issued a contract modification worth $946 million for three additional crewed missions to the International Space Station, locking in astronaut transport capacity well into the future. NASA orders tied to expanding station flights give SpaceX predictable income through the end of the decade.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?
Legal and Regulatory Wins
Beyond the launch pad, two developments removed potential obstacles. On Monday, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas rejected a request from environmental groups to temporarily halt a land swap involving roughly 700 acres on each side. The transaction can now proceed while the main legal case continues.
In mid-September, the Federal Communications Commission granted an international Section 214 authorization for mobile services over Starlink. The clearance does not by itself permit service in individual foreign markets, but it opens the door to global scaling of the satellite network.
A Share Unlock, Not a Sell-Off
The stock's recent softness traces to a straightforward supply event rather than any deterioration in the business. A lock-up period expired Thursday, freeing roughly 328.4 million shares for trading. The market began pricing in that looming supply on Wednesday, when the stock fell 4.11%, according to media reports. Separately, President and COO Gwynne Shotwell sold 342,170 shares after exercising options under a previously adopted trading plan.
Such liquidity events are the price of success: early backers and executives cash in gains while the market absorbs the added float. By Thursday itself, calm returned and the shares finished nearly flat. The episode nonetheless marks a real transition — SpaceX is no longer valued on vision alone but must now weather the ordinary cycles of institutional portfolios.
Analysts Split on What Comes Next
Wall Street's views diverge sharply at the intersection of industrial dominance and sheer market size. Julie Zhu of MoffettNathanson raised her price target to $142 in mid-September while keeping a Neutral rating. Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas struck a far more bullish tone on September 20, reiterating a Buy with a $300 target.
That gulf between cautious coverage and aggressive targets frames the core question: is this a mature infrastructure operator or a growth story without limits? The stock closed Friday at €130.36, putting it 10% above its 50-day average of €118.24. The valuation remains demanding, but the operating machine keeps supplying reasons to believe.
