SoftBank's Record 9.75% Coupon Exposes the Price Tag on Its AI Ambitions
Published on 10/14/2026 at 15:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deSoftBank Group has never paid bondholders so much to borrow. The Japanese conglomerate's September high-yield issuance hit a record $11 billion, a haul that included a note maturing in 2034 carrying a 9.75% coupon — the steepest rate the company has ever attached to a bond, according to Reuters. That single data point reframes the AI spending story: raising capital is not the problem, but doing so cheaply increasingly is.
The borrowing surge sits alongside an even larger potential pool of money. Masayoshi Son is courting Gulf investors for as much as $100 billion for a planned AI-focused fund, the Financial Times reported Friday, with Reuters citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not independently verify the report, and SoftBank did not respond to a request for comment. The distinction matters — the bond sale is done, while the fund talks remain an aspiration, and the reported figure should not be mistaken for committed capital or for relief on financing costs.
OpenAI Stake Anchors the Strategy
What the fundraising ultimately serves is visible in SoftBank's OpenAI position. The company has completed the third and final tranche of its follow-on investment of $10 billion, bringing its cumulative outlay to $64.6 billion and its stake to roughly 13%. That holding ties SoftBank directly to expectations for the AI business, and it forms the strategic backdrop to the financing question. The record coupon, meanwhile, makes plain that any additional debt comes with substantial interest obligations.
Two Separate Corporate Actions, One Investor Question
SoftBank also announced Friday that it will redeem in full a euro-denominated bond issue. The principal totals EUR405,103,000, with repayment set for October 22, 2026, at 100.00% of nominal value. The notes carry a 2.875% coupon and are senior.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank Group?
That redemption and the completed high-yield sale are distinct events. Repaying one bond offers no all-clear for funding the broader AI strategy — the central issue for shareholders remains the cost of capital. Access to the debt market is proven, and so is the record coupon attached to it. Extra financing through a possible AI fund, by contrast, has yet to be confirmed.
Market Pressure Adds a Second Front
SoftBank shares came under pressure Tuesday, caught in a selloff of Asian technology stocks that pushed the stock down 2.3% on the day. Reuters listed SoftBank among the decliners, pointing to competitive worries surrounding Chinese chipmaker CXMT. The focus was not a fresh company announcement but a reassessment of AI investments and their economic prospects. Concerns span both competition in AI hardware and the financing of large-scale spending; media reports said advances by a Chinese memory chipmaker deepened fears of mounting price pressure. Selling in semiconductor names had already spread from the U.S. to Asian markets on Monday. For SoftBank, the environment is especially relevant given its OpenAI stake — though the recent decline reflects a reaction to market conditions, not any reported change to that holding.
Commitments Still Short of Certainty
New AI projects carry the same caveat about how binding they really are. SoftBank, Grab Holdings and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad signed a framework agreement on October 8 for a possible AI and digital infrastructure platform in Sarawak, Malaysia. The partners intend to work out a roadmap for phased development, but the deal does not obligate them to proceed — it documents joint study, not a committed project launch. That nuance matters as much for gauging capital needs as the unresolved outcome of the fund discussions.
SoftBank Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
SoftBank has set its next scheduled results date for November 10, when it will present second-quarter figures for fiscal 2026. Three distinct layers will shape how investors read the stock: existing investments, financing measures that have actually been announced, and ventures with no assured execution.
