SoftBank shares gave up 1.1% on Friday to close at €25.95, caught in a wider retreat by Japanese technology names after Wall Street had weakened overnight. The trigger, according to Reuters, was the latest evidence from Amazon and Intel that building out artificial intelligence is swallowing enormous amounts of cash — and raising hard questions about who pays for it and whether the returns ever arrive.

That anxiety is not new. Bloomberg reported as far back as 22 October on investor unease over SoftBank's mounting financing costs and the sustainability of its sprawling AI commitments. The Amazon and Intel numbers simply poured fuel on a fire that was already burning.

A Rating Nod, Not a Rethink

Jefferies offered a measure of relief on Wednesday, lifting SoftBank to "Hold" from "Underperform" and raising its price target to JPY 7,270 from JPY 3,140. The brokerage was careful to frame the upgrade as a response to diminished downside risk after the share-price slide, rather than any fresh conviction that the stock has more room to run.

LINE MAN Capital Raise Pushed Back

On the corporate action front, SoftBank said Friday it has pushed back the completion of a planned capital increase at LINE MAN CORPORATION PTE. LTD. The transaction covers 12,428,298 new shares worth US$130 million. Originally slated for completion by the end of October 2026, it is now expected to close by the end of January 2027. SoftBank cited the need for the parties involved to have more time to align on the agreements.

Malaysia Talks and a Takeover That Wasn't

Negotiations are also still in progress on a Malaysian investment project. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said SoftBank is planning technology investments totaling US$50 billion in the country, Bloomberg reported on Monday, though the portion attributable to SoftBank itself was not specified. Artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and data centers sit at the heart of the proposal, which remains under discussion.

Separately, Bloomberg reported on 16 October that SoftBank had weighed an acquisition of Allied Universal, with an equity value of up to US$18 billion under consideration. No agreement was reached, according to that report.

Bond Retired in Full

SoftBank closed out the early redemption of its euro-denominated senior notes on 23 October. The 2.875% series, originally issued in 2021 and due 6 January 2027, was repaid ahead of schedule in its entirety and cancelled; no bonds of that series remain outstanding. Unlike the LINE MAN capital increase, this transaction is already done and dusted.

Dividend Set for December

The same day brought a concrete payout: an interim dividend of JPY 5.50 per share for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2027. The total distribution amounts to JPY 31,346 million, with payment scheduled for 2 December 2026.

Investors will get their next hard look at the group's numbers on 10 November 2026, when SoftBank reports results for the second quarter of fiscal 2026.
