SK Hynix finished its share repurchase ahead of schedule today, and the stock rose 5.8% — a move that also leaned on Super Micro Computer's unexpectedly strong preliminary revenue outlook for its first fiscal quarter of 2027, which lifted confidence in AI server demand and carried other Korean chip names along with it. For all the relief about capital returns, the more substantive company-specific news sits in China: Reuters reports that SK Hynix's Dalian NAND facilities are being upgraded to 240 or more layers, up from the 192 layers produced there now.

What the program actually delivered

The buyback had been sized at 40.0434 trillion won for 24.07 million treasury shares, roughly 3.3% of shares outstanding. Financial News puts the executed figure at 39.4269 trillion won. Launched on August 20 with a planned end date of November 19, the program closed about a month early.

Every repurchased share is slated for cancellation. That distinction matters more than the speed of execution: the buyback is complete, while the cancellation has been announced rather than carried out. Nor does a fast finish say anything about how attractive the acquired stock was valued over the long run. The takeaway is not that the pace deserves applause, but that investors should watch whether the capital policy can be credibly continued after a program of this size.

A buyer steps out of the market

Trading flows during the program's run offer a sobering counterpoint. Financial News reported net selling by foreign investors, retail investors and institutions over that stretch, meaning the buyback met willing sellers across several investor groups. A large program, in other words, is no guarantee of a stable share price.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Its completion also removes that specific buyer from the market. That does not automatically spell fresh selling pressure, but it does mean the support from a finished program should not be projected into the future. Any further returns must first be announced and then delivered.

October 28 is the next test

SK Hynix plans to present additional shareholder returns at its earnings release on October 28. Hana Securities analyst Kim Rok-ho expects at least 30 trillion won in additional resources for that purpose, based on free cash flow, with buybacks and share cancellations likely to take priority over dividends.

That is an expectation, not a company commitment, and the line between a convincing outlook and a durable capital policy runs exactly there. The strongest signal would not be the largest possible headline number but a visible link between cash generated and the returns promised to shareholders.

Dalian sharpens the production case

The upgrade work in Dalian is meant to serve AI demand and to strengthen competitiveness against Chinese rivals. It is more substantial for investors than a simple sympathy move alongside other technology stocks, since it shows SK Hynix working on its production base rather than merely riding better demand expectations.

Confirmed work is not the same as confirmed output, however. Reuters reported that ongoing upgrades were confirmed but that specific production plans were not disclosed, so neither a binding start date nor a particular earnings contribution can be inferred. A separate Reuters report on October 15, citing people familiar with the matter, described a request for US approval for additional American chipmaking equipment for Dalian, tied to plans by US unit Solidigm for a NAND fab in the United States. That request is not a granted permit, and keeping the two apart guards against reading expansion intentions as secured progress.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The demand signal and its limits

Super Micro's beat is a genuine positive for the demand story — SK Hynix supplies high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, so a better server outlook supports memory demand expectations. But the surprise came from another company. It is not a new revenue forecast from SK Hynix and should not be treated as one. Whether improved demand turns into improved business also depends on SK Hynix's own production capabilities.

Nomura adds longer-range support, expecting memory chip shortages to persist at least through 2028 and reiterating a buy rating with a target price of 4.7 million won; the brokerage considers the market reaction to China's ChangXin Memory Technologies overdone. That view bolsters the case for a durable earnings base, though it remains a forecast, and a distant target price substitutes for neither upcoming results nor proof that enough free cash will be generated to fund further returns.

The balanced reading: SK Hynix has shown it can act, and Dalian points to a real operational effort behind the AI narrative. What comes next hinges on cash flow and execution — not on how quickly a single buyback was completed.
