SK Hynix Unveils 256GB CXL 3.2 Memory as Earnings Countdown Begins
Published on 10/16/2026 at 10:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix used the opening of the OCP Global Summit on Friday to roll out a second-generation CXL 3.2 memory product with 256 gigabytes of capacity, a launch that lands just days before the South Korean chipmaker reports third-quarter results. The company says the new module delivers more than double the bandwidth of its predecessor while cutting power consumption by roughly 30% — specifications aimed squarely at data centers crunching the massive datasets behind intensive AI models.
The presentation also featured SK Hynix's MARS rack-scale architecture and disclosed development progress on High Bandwidth Flash, underscoring the group's push to stay at the front of memory chip design.
A Rebound Built on Falling Yields
Investors greeted the news against a brighter market backdrop. South Korean equities staged a recovery Friday as US bond yields retreated, a shift that brought relief across the technology sector after macroeconomic worries had weighed on Asian trading floors. SK Hynix shares climbed 3.2% to close at 1,303,000.00 KRW, offering market participants a breather following several sessions of heavy losses.
The stock remains well below its 52-week high of 2,987,000.00 KRW, set in June.
Even so, the broader industry mood has been fragile. Reuters reported that Asian chipmakers came under pressure this week during a global selloff, as rising bond yields prompted investors to reassess the hefty capital commitments flowing into AI infrastructure. Adding to the unease were reports of technological advances at Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), which is said to be working on a denser DRAM cell architecture and targeting a DDR5 server module by the end of the year — developments that stirred doubts about the competitive lead held by established manufacturers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Washington's Export Pen and the Dalian Fab
Regulatory matters also drew attention this week. Reuters reported Wednesday that SK Hynix is seeking US government approval to ship additional US-made chipmaking equipment to its facility in Dalian, China, a request tied to plans for a new fab in the United States. The company stressed that installation of the tools in the so-called Module B at Dalian is proceeding in close coordination with, and subject to clearance from, US authorities, and made clear the step does not amount to an expansion of existing production capacity.
For memory producers like SK Hynix, international market access and regulatory requirements rank alongside global rate trends as decisive factors in operational planning.
Analysts Stay Bullish Ahead of October 28 Call
Clarity on the operating picture arrives later this month. In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, SK Hynix set its conference call on third-quarter 2026 results for October 28 at 9:00 a.m. Seoul time.
The analyst community remains largely upbeat despite the recent turbulence. Kim Sun-woo of Meritz Securities reaffirmed his "Buy" rating on October 12 with a price target of 3.2 million won, projecting operating profit of 80.1 trillion won for the quarter. IBK Investment & Securities had already reiterated its own "Buy" call on October 7, setting a 4 million won target and forecasting an operating result of 75.1 trillion won.
SK Securities added its voice Tuesday, keeping a "Buy" rating and a 4 million KRW target while estimating third-quarter operating profit at 79 trillion won — roughly 7% above the average market consensus. That optimism reflects confidence in the memory maker's earnings power, even as observers keep one eye on the execution of future product generations and the resilience of the supply chains behind them.
One cloud on that horizon: media reports suggest some shipments of HBM4 back-end equipment originally slated for the second half of 2026 could slip into 2027. SK Hynix has declined to comment on those reports, which did not specify the volumes of equipment involved.
