SK Hynix Sinks as Oracle's AI Funding Plans Expose the Sector's Return Problem
Published on 11/03/2026 at 14:52 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares fell 5.0% on Thursday, caught in a sell-off sweeping South Korean chip names as investors turned a harsher light on whether the industry's enormous AI spending will ever pay for itself. The trigger, according to media reports, was Oracle's plan to raise capital through share and bond sales to finance its AI infrastructure build-out — a reminder that the bills behind the boom are mounting faster than the returns.
The decline belongs to a broader reassessment of the AI trade rather than to anything specific out of the company itself. No fresh negative corporate disclosure from SK Hynix featured in the reports. Instead, steep losses among US technology and semiconductor stocks amplified the pressure across the sector, with Oracle's funding needs cited as a key source of the renewed unease.
A Market Question, Not a Company Warning
That distinction matters. The selling reflects doubts about the economics of customer spending — whether the billions poured into AI data centers will generate adequate profits, and how the companies bankrolling them will carry the financing burden. For SK Hynix, the tension is plain: solid operating numbers offer little shelter when sentiment toward the entire investment theme sours.
The company's third-quarter 2026 results make the point. SK Hynix posted record revenue of 104.6155 trillion Won, with operating profit of 83.3338 trillion Won and net profit of 39.7756 trillion Won. Those figures stand as the company-specific counterweight to the sector's gloom — yet they do not answer the larger question hanging over its customers' spending.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Contracts Lock In Capacity Through 2027–2028
On the operational side, SK Hynix said on October 28 that long-term agreements already cover more than 50% of its production capacity for 2027–2028. Large-scale shipments of HBM4 have also begun, and the company expects the next-generation memory to become its leading product from the fourth quarter of 2026.
That contractual coverage gives investors a concrete read on future utilization, though secured capacity is not the same as a guarantee of share-price performance — nor does it resolve the profitability questions facing the customers footing the bill.
Analyst sentiment mirrors the split. IBK Investment & Securities reaffirmed its buy rating on Thursday but cut its price target from 4 million Won to 3.2 million Won. The broker attributed the reduction to the gap between the share price and its estimated intrinsic value, not to deteriorating conditions in the memory market — meaning the lower target should not be read as a dimmer view of the operating backdrop.
Payouts and a Shelved Listing
Alongside its order book, SK Hynix has put capital returns on the table. For 2026 it announced a shareholder remuneration plan totaling roughly 100 trillion Won: cash dividends of at least 30 trillion Won, plus share buybacks and cancellations of at least 60 trillion Won.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The capital-markets environment is already shaping decisions elsewhere in the group. On October 23, SK Hynix disclosed that Solidigm had halted its review of possible pre-IPO financing and a stock exchange listing, citing volatility in the financial markets and the correction in semiconductor shares. SK Hynix said it will continue to examine alternative financing options to support Solidigm's growth.
For investors, the picture cuts both ways. Long-term customer commitments and announced capital returns anchor the bull case; Solidigm's shelved plans show that choppy markets are already influencing financing choices. Thursday's slide is a reminder of how heavily those environment risks are currently weighing on the valuation.
