SK Hynix's DRAM and UFS memory products reached Earth orbit aboard a South Korean satellite, the company's latest bid to prove its storage components can survive conditions far beyond the atmosphere. The craft established radio contact with its ground station as planned after the fifth launch of the Nuri carrier rocket, according to media reports. The mission is designed to put the memory modules through their paces in the harshest environment available to a chipmaker.

The orbital test ran alongside a fresh round of technology disclosures. On September 23, SK Hynix used foundry partner TSMC's OIP conference to unveil new memory solutions and development roadmaps, with validation work on the next-generation HBM5 standard taking center stage. Products from the HBM4, SOCAMM2 and eSSD lines, aimed at data centers and AI workloads, also featured.

A Loosened Share Supply in New York

For holders of the company's US-listed securities, a key trading restriction lapsed on Thursday, when the lockup period expired. That frees SK Hynix itself, affiliated companies and members of management from the previous selling constraints. Bloomberg described the expiry as a possible catalyst for market volatility.

Such milestones matter because they widen the pool of stock eligible to change hands once early backers and insiders are no longer bound by contractual selling bans. Whether those parties actually offload shares, and in what size, is an open question. Traders nonetheless treat the altered supply picture as a factor that could shape near-term price action.

Solidigm's US Listing Still Unconfirmed

Strategic questions surrounding subsidiary Solidigm continue to command attention. Bloomberg reported that Solidigm has mandated Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as lead bookrunners for a potential US initial public offering that could raise roughly $10 billion. SK Hynix responded that no decision on a Solidigm listing has been made, leaving the US float plans unconfirmed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The company had already addressed the topic on October 1, stating that no decision had been taken on a potential Solidigm IPO in the US or on other capital measures, and that any option would be judged by its contribution to long-term corporate and shareholder value.

Gwangju Cluster and a Buy Call

On the operational front, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said Friday that SK Hynix intends to build its planned semiconductor cluster in Gwangju as quickly as conditions permit, citing persistently rapid growth in chip demand. No date has been set for breaking ground.

Analysts offered a vote of confidence during the week. On Wednesday, IBK Investment & Securities maintained its "Buy" rating on SK Hynix and left its price target at 4 million Won.

Memory Sector Meets Headwinds

Technical milestones aside, the semiconductor sector has run into noticeable resistance. International memory names came under pressure on Thursday, weighed down by rising oil prices and climbing US Treasury yields, while preliminary results from rival Samsung Electronics soured sentiment after its operating profit fell short of market expectations. Uncertainty over future supply conditions and memory pricing added to the caution.

Beyond profit-taking, market watchers attributed the selling to concern that the current memory cycle may already have peaked. Short-term trades through leveraged index funds amplified the swings.

Personnel Moves and the Earnings Date

Personnel flows also drew scrutiny on Tuesday. An inquiry by the office of South Korean lawmaker Choi Soo-jin found that 27 former employees of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have moved to Chinese memory maker CXMT. The lawmaker's office made clear it found no evidence of organized poaching or an actual technology transfer.

Investors now turn to the end of the month, when SK Hynix will release official third-quarter 2026 results on October 27. Ahead of the publication, media reports said the Won's currency trajectory and rising bonus costs have dampened expectations for the figures. That date remains provisional and has not been issued as a confirmed company statement.
