SK Hynix's US Receipts Trade at a 40% Premium as Foreign Investors Cash Out in Seoul

A striking valuation gap has opened up between SK Hynix's Korean common stock and its US depositary receipts, with the Nasdaq-listed line settling at $195.13 on Friday against a Seoul close of 1,841,000.00 KRW — a premium of more than 40% when converted into the home-market shares.
The divergence stems less from differing views on the memory-chip maker's prospects than from the mechanics of cross-border trading. American investors are paying up for exposure to a leading supplier of AI memory, while the cumbersome conversion process between the two securities keeps arbitrageurs from eroding the spread.
A Placement That Sold Out in Days
The root of the imbalance traces back to last summer's US offering. SK Hynix raised $26.5 billion through the sale of more than 177.9 million depositary receipts at $149 apiece. According to Bloomberg, the fixed conversion quota of 17.79 million shares was exhausted as early as July 23.
With no fresh receipts able to be created from Korean common stock since then, supply overseas remains artificially tight. Market watchers caution domestic investors against reading the US quote as an implied upside target for Seoul. Should the conversion cap be relaxed or the US float expanded, the premium would likely compress quickly.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Foreign Selling Pressure Builds at Home
While US buyers tolerate the markup, the home market has been dominated by sellers. Exchange data show heavy profit-taking by international accounts, pushing the foreign ownership share in the chipmaker down to 49.7% on Friday — the lowest level since May 15, 2023.
The retreat follows an extraordinary run. Even after the recent consolidation, the stock is up 183% since the start of the year, though it now sits 38% below its 52-week high.
Supplier Fund Doubled, R&D Costs Shared
Against that trading backdrop, SK Hynix is deepening its commitment to the domestic production network. On Tuesday the company said it would double its fund for facilitating supplier payments from 50 billion Won to 100 billion Won, and will cover as much as 50% of early-stage research and development costs at selected partners.
The move is part of a broader effort to tighten collaboration across the semiconductor supply chain. The company was named Partner of the Year in the 3DFabric-HBM integration category for a second consecutive year. It follows the launch roughly two weeks ago of SK Hynix Ventures, a dedicated investment arm targeting the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Solidigm Listing Talk Meets a Measured Response
Speculation about future capital measures also stirred the stock. Reuters reported that subsidiary Solidigm is weighing a US initial public offering that could take place as soon as next year, with a valuation of up to $150 billion and an offering volume of $15 billion under discussion — though the plans remain at an early stage.
SK Hynix addressed the matter on Thursday, stating that no decision has been made regarding a possible listing of Solidigm or other capital-related plans. Any future move would be guided above all by long-term corporate and shareholder value, the company said.
Analysts Trim Targets, Keep Buy Ratings
On the analyst front, DS Investment & Securities cut its price target for SK Hynix on Tuesday to 2.64 million Won from 3.1 million Won, while maintaining a buy recommendation. The brokerage attributed the revision to changed estimates for the third quarter and shifts in the product mix.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For market observers, the adjustment underscores how sensitive earnings expectations in the memory sector are to temporary swings in the product portfolio, even when structural demand remains intact.
Supply Risks in Focus
Alongside the price discrepancies, the medium-term supply picture is drawing attention. The think tank CSIS warned of the risks of a future glut should leading producers expand manufacturing capacity too aggressively in step with rising demand.
Management is sticking with its planned investments and expects the semiconductor cycle to develop steadily over the medium term. Major customers continue to secure high-performance memory capacity through long-term agreements, which dampens the risk of sudden price shocks.
