The whipsawing in SK Hynix shares this week has been nothing short of violent. After Friday's historic surge — the largest single-day gain for the stock since 2009 — the memory-chip maker gave back a hefty chunk of those gains on Monday, closing at 1,567,000 won, down 8.79 percent. The swing was so sharp that it erased nearly a third of the prior session's 29.95 percent leap, which had taken the stock to 1,718,000 won.

The turbulence wasn't confined to SK Hynix. Seoul's KOSPI benchmark, which had rocketed 17.91 percent on Friday, shed roughly five percent on Monday. Rival Samsung Electronics also slid more than eight percent. Foreign investors — who had poured record sums into Korean tech names just a day earlier — offloaded SK Hynix shares worth 1.77 trillion won on a net basis. Institutional players pulled back around 450 billion won, while retail investors bought against the trend.

A Market That Swings Between Panic and Euphoria

Market observers largely framed Monday's retreat as textbook profit-taking following an overheated rally, rather than a fundamental break. One asset manager described the Korean market as suffering from a kind of bipolar disorder, lurching between panic and euphoria almost overnight. That characterization has fit the past several weeks with uncomfortable precision.

The volatility has been amplified by newly launched leveraged single-stock products on SK Hynix and Samsung, which are seen as accelerants for the extreme moves in both directions. The pattern has been in place since late July, and on a weekly basis, SK Hynix now sits roughly 13 percent lower.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The Numbers Behind the Noise

Despite the chaos, the longer-term picture remains striking. SK Hynix is still up 141.19 percent year-to-date — a figure that puts the recent pullback in perspective while underscoring just how extraordinary the preceding rally was. The stock currently trades about 33 percent above its 200-day moving average of 1,187,000 won, even after falling more than 47 percent from its 52-week high of 2,987,000 won, which was set as recently as late June.

Fundamentally, the company has delivered. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue surged 257 percent to 79.3 trillion won, while operating profit climbed to 60.5 trillion won — six times the year-earlier figure. The operating margin hit a record roughly 76 percent, fueled by sharply rising prices: DRAM average selling prices rose about 30 percent quarter-over-quarter, while NAND memory saw gains of roughly 50 percent.

Analysts Trim Targets, But Stay Constructive

Even with those numbers, several brokers cut their price targets after Monday's slide. Shinhan Investment slashed its target from 4.2 million won to 2.7 million won, with other houses following suit. The message from analysts: the operational strength is not in dispute, but Friday's surge had pushed valuations too far, too fast.

Morgan Stanley, meanwhile, upgraded Korean equities to "overweight" following July's 22.2 percent correction, citing an attractive entry point after speculative positions were flushed out. The bank sees the KOSPI reaching 9,000 points over the long term. A market strategist told CNBC that gains like Friday's shouldn't be expected as a permanent state, but the recovery itself could still have room to run given how bearish positioning had been and how strong SK Hynix's fundamentals in the AI memory business remain. A semiconductor analyst at Futurum Group added that the recent rally reflects growing confidence in the ongoing AI investment cycle — not a fundamental re-rating.

HBM Story Remains Central — But Competition Looms

The core investment thesis still hinges on high-bandwidth memory for artificial intelligence. SK Hynix began mass production of HBM4 chips in the second quarter, has signed ten long-term supply agreements, and is already working on the HBM4E successor for 2027. Capital spending remains heavy: the company plans capex in the upper range of 40 trillion won this year and is pulling forward construction of the new Cheongju M15X fab.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

UBS, however, sees a shift in the competitive landscape. While SK Hynix is expected to hold roughly 48 percent of the HBM bit-market share in 2026, Samsung Electronics could overtake it in 2027, with 41 percent versus 39 percent. Despite the recent turbulence, UBS maintains a $204 price target on SK Hynix's US-listed ADRs — implying upside of around 61 percent from current levels.

Nvidia's Rubin Ultra Adds a Layer of Uncertainty

Adding to the pressure was a report from research firm SemiAnalysis, which circulated in late July and helped set the stage for the sell-off. The report suggested Nvidia plans a lower HBM4 memory configuration for its upcoming Rubin Ultra platform than originally expected — a potential sign that the price rally in high-performance memory may not run indefinitely. Among the major memory makers, SK Hynix appears particularly exposed to this uncertainty, given its heavier reliance on the HBM business relative to competitors.

For investors, the picture is genuinely mixed: record profits and a growing HBM order book sit alongside concerns about fading pricing momentum and stretched valuations. The next major catalyst for the entire memory sector will be Nvidia's quarterly earnings on August 26, which should offer a clearer read on whether demand for AI memory chips remains as robust as the recent rally suggested.
