SK Hynix Closes Buyback Early as Dalian Upgrade Adds a Second Front to the AI Story
Published on 10/21/2026 at 12:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix wrapped up its share repurchase programme well ahead of schedule, giving investors a concrete capital-return datapoint just as a bullish read-across from Super Micro Computer lifted the stock 5.8%. The two threads — one about how the company spends its money, the other about how the market feels about AI demand — are worth keeping apart.
The buyback, reported by media outlets, totalled 40.0434 trillion won and covered 24.07 million shares, all of which are slated for cancellation. The programme had originally been scheduled to run until 19 November. Completion of the purchases and the retirement of the stock are distinct steps: the buying is done, while the cancellation remains an announced follow-up rather than a finished capital measure.
SK Hynix has said it will disclose further shareholder-return measures alongside its next quarterly results, so the closed programme is a reference point rather than a full stop. The question now is what form of capital return follows.
Super Micro Lends the Sector a Hand
The day's momentum came from elsewhere. Super Micro Computer's preliminary revenue outlook for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 beat expectations, shoring up confidence in demand for AI servers. SK Hynix, as a supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), rode the wave alongside other Korean chip names.
That chain of logic holds up, but it is not a business update from SK Hynix itself. Server sales at another company can support demand expectations; they do not substitute for the memory maker's own results or its guidance. Anyone reading the session's move should not blur that line.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
More telling, perhaps, is where SK Hynix says its technology is heading. At the OCP Global Summit on Friday the company laid out its vision for the next generation of AI infrastructure, including memory-centric server systems and AI memory technologies beyond conventional HBM solutions. Back on 14 October, development chief Ahn Hyun argued that leadership in AI memory demands more than shipping large volumes of HBM — a broader framing of the company's future than its most closely watched product.
Dalian Moves to 240 Layers
The more substantive company-specific news concerns the Chinese site. Reuters reported today that SK Hynix is upgrading its NAND facilities in Dalian to 240 or more layers, up from the 192 layers produced there currently. The modernisation is intended to serve AI demand and sharpen competitiveness against Chinese rivals.
For shareholders this carries more weight than a simple sympathy move with other tech names: the company is working on its production base rather than merely benefiting from improved demand expectations. Even so, confirmed work is not the same as concrete output plans. According to Reuters, ongoing upgrades were confirmed but specific production plans were not disclosed, so neither a binding start date nor a particular earnings contribution can be inferred.
A related regulatory question belongs in the same assessment. On 15 October, Reuters reported — citing people familiar with the matter — that SK Hynix had sought US approval for additional American chipmaking equipment for Dalian, linking the request to plans by its US unit Solidigm for a NAND fab in the United States. An reported application is not a granted permit, and keeping the two apart guards against reading expansion intentions as secured progress.
Two Tests on the Calendar
SK Hynix has invited investors to its third-quarter 2026 results on 28 October, to be published before 9:00 Seoul time, with a conference call starting at 9:00.
Two different claims meet at that date: technological leadership on one side, capital returns on the other. The promised shareholder measures will show how the company intends to extend or complement the completed buyback, while the quarterly figures supply its own operating yardstick. Industry optimism explains the tailwind; company decisions and its own numbers will determine how much substance sits behind it.
