SK Hynix shares edged up 0.4% to KRW 1,277,000.00 in Seoul today, a modest bounce that follows the stock's steepest weekly decline since the 2008 financial crisis. The rebound offers little comfort: the chipmaker still trades 57% below its 52-week high, and the forces behind the selloff have not gone away.

Foreign investors pulled a net KRW 5.35 trillion out of SK Hynix stock last week, according to Korea Exchange data. The exodus cut overseas ownership to 48.85% — the lowest level since December 2021 — and drove a 15% slide over just five trading sessions as market participants locked in profits across the semiconductor sector following the earlier AI-driven rally.

A Regulatory Hurdle for Solidigm

Adding to the cautious mood is a debate over Solidigm, the US subsidiary created from SK Hynix's $9 billion acquisition of Intel's NAND and SSD business. At a parliamentary hearing today, Lee Chan-jin, governor of South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), raised concerns about a potential US initial public offering of the unit. The authorities are examining whether a separate listing would breach national rules on dual listings. SK Hynix responded that no such move has been decided and that it prioritizes long-term value for existing shareholders across all strategic options.

Goldman Sticks to Its Conviction

Analysts, by contrast, remain upbeat on the operating story. Goldman Sachs lifted its 12-month price target on SK Hynix to KRW 3.5 million, citing a structural shortage in global memory markets expected to persist through 2028. Supply of DRAM, NAND and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) components is set to tighten further next year, the bank argued, underpinned by the enormous hardware demands of artificial intelligence data centers. Beyond the current HBM portfolio, the industry is eyeing future standards such as NVHBM, which is expected to deliver up to 30% more bandwidth than HBM4E while consuming 15% less power.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Two Trillion Won for the Supplier Base

On the corporate side, SK Hynix unveiled a KRW 2 trillion support program for South Korean suppliers of semiconductor materials, components and production equipment. The package is being arranged in partnership with the government, the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation and four commercial banks, and is aimed at shoring up the domestic ecosystem.

The company is also pressing ahead on technology. At the OCP Global Summit 2026 on Friday, it presented new memory and server system solutions, including the MARS rack-scale architecture and a second-generation 256-gigabyte CXL 3.2 memory module promising more than double the bandwidth and roughly 30% better energy efficiency than its predecessor. That same day, SK Hynix made clear it is not seeking capacity expansion at its Dalian Mod B site in China, where equipment installations are proceeding in coordination with US authorities.

AI Doubts and a Wall of Macro Headwinds

The broader backdrop remains difficult. Media reports point to growing market skepticism about the viability and profitability of massive AI investments, compounded by sustained selling from foreign and institutional investors, rising oil prices and global interest rates. Market participants are also holding back ahead of quarterly results from major US technology companies. Profit estimates for SK Hynix and rival Samsung Electronics have been flat for two months, and reports of technological advances by Chinese memory chipmakers are weighing on sentiment across South Korea's technology sector. The stock is nonetheless still up 88% since the start of the year.

Earlier in the week, the picture was bleaker still: SK Hynix fell 4.3% to KRW 1,222,000.00 in early trading in Seoul as the benchmark KOSPI shed more than 2%.

Investors will get a clearer read on the company's fundamentals shortly. SK Hynix is due to report third-quarter 2026 results on October 27 and 28, with the market anticipating a sharp year-on-year jump in profit — and watching to see whether demand for advanced AI memory can withstand the sector's mounting worries.
