Six Nines or Bust: What Chipmakers Demand From Nitrogen Generators
Published on 10/12/2026 at 05:31 | Editorial boerse-global.dePressure swing adsorption has quietly become the workhorse behind industrial nitrogen supply, and the specifications attached to it are tightening. A technical review dated 09.10.2026 lays out how PSA systems for nitrogen generation are judged — not only on operational safety, but on how precisely they are matched to their intended industrial setting. The technology spans a wide range of duties, yet each sector brings its own purity and quality thresholds.
Purity tiers, from modest to extreme
Standard PSA setups deliver purity between 99 and 99,999 percent, which covers medium-to-high requirements at large flow rates. Where gas purity matters less, membrane separation is put forward as the process alternative.
Semiconductor manufacturing operates on an entirely different scale. Chip fabrication calls for 99,9999 percent purity paired with an exceptionally low dew point.
Regionally, demand for PSA nitrogen units is spread across a mixed set of industries: textile dyeing, fine chemicals, electronics production, biotechnology, and the manufacture of lithium batteries and photovoltaic systems.
Supplier-side commitments also enter the picture. One vendor points to eight software copyrights along with service pledges of an eight-hour response time within its province and 24 hours outside it, plus an unconditional replacement guarantee within one month.
How carbon sieves pull oxygen out of air
The efficiency of any PSA plant rests largely on the adsorption material inside it. According to Ningbo Inno Pharmchem, in a report dated 08.10.2026, carbon molecular sieves (CMS) selectively strip oxygen from compressed air.
The separation is kinetic, driven by the pore structure of the material. These sieves span purity levels from ordinary industrial grade up to the high-purity gases needed for laboratory and analytical instruments.
Key performance parameters for CMS include particle sizes of 1,0–1,2 mm or 1,3–1,6 mm, alongside bulk density, compressive strength and adsorption capacity. The company states the material withstands thousands of adsorption and desorption cycles with only minimal performance loss.
Nitrogen streams produced this way serve purposes such as inerting in chemical processes and as a protective atmosphere during soldering and wafer fabrication in the electronics industry.
Lithium zeolites and the cryogenic workhorses
Specialised molecular sieves also feature in oxygen generation and gas purification. Lithium-based X-type zeolites from Ningbo Inno Pharmchem achieve oxygen purity stably above 93 percent in vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) units, according to a report also dated 08.10.2026.
These lithium sieves bind nitrogen far more strongly than oxygen, giving a separation factor above that of conventional sodium- or calcium-based sieves. Energy-optimised cycles run at lower pressure and cut electricity consumption.
Fast kinetics shorten the adsorption and desorption phases, raising output per unit of time. Typical VPSA applications include portable concentrators, clinical supply systems, steel and glass production, chemical synthesis and environmental engineering.
Cryogenic air separation plants take a different route, relying on 13X molecular sieves with a pore size of 10 angstroms. A report dated 10.10.2026 notes that they adsorb water and carbon dioxide ahead of low-temperature distillation.
That step keeps frozen water or carbon dioxide from clogging heat exchangers and valves. The 13X sieves offer high carbon dioxide uptake capacity, can be regenerated by heating, and are additionally used in natural gas drying and desulphurisation as well as catalyst carriers.
