Silver Speculators Add 2,006 Contracts as Fed Meeting Looms Over a Choppy Tape
Published on 09/12/2026 at 15:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deSilver finished the week at $65.02 an ounce, up 1.5% on Friday, but the headline gain masks a bruising stretch that left the metal down 2.7% week-over-week and 7.9% lower since the start of the year. Behind the whipsaw sits a market pulled in two directions: large speculators are quietly rebuilding bullish bets, while the Federal Reserve's Sept. 15–16 gathering keeps a lid on conviction.
Positioning Tells a Different Story Than Price
CFTC data for the week through Sept. 8 show net-long positions in COMEX silver climbing by 2,006 contracts to 14,176. That build came against the grain of a volatile tape, suggesting institutional players are leaning on structural arguments rather than chasing the daily print. The path to that number has hardly been smooth — earlier filings revealed pullbacks to a multi-week low of 8,863 contracts before positioning recovered, painting a picture of uneven but broadly constructive accumulation.
The futures flow contrasts with the spot picture. Friday's advance left silver just above its 50-day moving average of $63.27, yet it remains roughly 12% below its 200-day average of $73.75 — a gap that underscores how much ground has been surrendered since the summer peak.
Five Pillars, One Weak Link
Scott Rubner of Citadel Securities recently laid out five supports for gold and silver: options signals in the GLD and SLV funds, squeeze potential from net-short positioning among commodity trading advisors, accelerating central bank gold purchases since late 2024, and the prospect of retail inflows. The fifth — an expectation of a looser Fed — is the one currently under strain.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?
Hotter-than-expected August core inflation has scrambled the rate outlook. Bank of America analysts now see a 25-basis-point Fed hike next week as likely, a scenario that raises the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding metals and goes a long way toward explaining silver's sharp reactions to each new economic release.
A Week of Violent Swings
The turbulence has been building for weeks. After solid gains in late August, silver came under heavy pressure in early September when unexpectedly firm U.S. jobs data lifted rate-hike odds. A stronger dollar made the metal costlier for overseas buyers, dragging the price down, and an unusually hot inflation reading delivered a second, sharper correction shortly after.
Those gyrations are visible in the technicals. Annualized 30-day volatility sits at 38%, a reading that captures just how jittery recent sessions have been. Even so, silver's modest 2.8% cushion above its 50-day average points to at least a tentative stabilization following the selloff.
What the Fed Decides Next
Hawkish Fed signals have repeatedly pushed the price below the $65 mark, while stretches of easing rate anxiety have triggered swift rebounds. That pattern is likely to persist until policymakers deliver their verdict on Tuesday and Wednesday. Traders have responded by keeping position sizes in check, waiting for a clear directional cue — whether on the rate level or the forward path — that could finally break the current oscillation.
For now, the market is left with a split screen: structural buying arguments and a fresh speculator build on one side, the threat of tighter policy on the other. With 30-day volatility at 38%, both forces can stay in play at once. A 12-month gain of 54% still stands as a striking longer-term result, even as 2025's year-to-date decline of 7.9% keeps the near-term mood cautious.
