Silver’s Demand Prospects Meet a Fresh Oil-Driven Setback

Spot silver fell 3.3% to 48.89 USD as rising oil prices revived inflation worries, offsetting prospective demand from India's import authorizations.

India’s approval of silver imports could add physical demand, but it has not yet translated into confirmed purchases. That distinction matters as the metal reverses course: after gaining 2.9% to 50.54 USD per ounce yesterday, spot silver fell 3.3% today to 48.89 USD, ending below the level that had recently marked a short-term stabilization point.

Heraeus reported that India had authorized imports of around 6,500 tonnes over the coming six months. The permissions could lift physical inflows and consumption over the next two quarters, offering a potential source of support after the recent sell-off. But approvals are not completed imports, and the demand boost remains prospective.

Oil and market sentiment swing back into focus

Yesterday’s rebound followed a different set of cues. Reuters reported that falling oil prices eased inflation concerns and helped precious metals, amid reports of progress toward possible US-Iran negotiations. No agreement had been confirmed. Today, Reuters reported a US attack on Iran’s Qeshm island, and oil prices recovered. Higher energy costs are again feeding concerns about persistent inflation.

The change in direction highlights how quickly the near-term forces affecting silver can shift. On Friday, Reuters linked higher energy prices and inflation concerns to expectations that US interest rates would stay elevated for longer, weighing on both gold and silver. For today’s decline, however, interest rates alone may not explain the move: another market report pointed to weakness in technology stocks and copper, while US yields and the US dollar offered little explanation for silver’s losses.

Selling in technology and AI shares, along with liquidations, may also have weighed on the metal. A broad reduction in risk is one possible interpretation, but a direct connection has not been established.

A forecast deficit, but stocks remain part of the picture

The Silver Institute’s World Silver Survey 2026 forecasts a deficit of 46.3 million ounces this year, which would make it the sixth consecutive annual shortfall. That outlook does not, by itself, guarantee immediate price support.

Metals Focus reported that London held 932 million ounces of silver at the end of September, including around 267 million ounces outside physically backed exchange-traded products. Those available stocks complicate the idea that a projected annual deficit necessarily means metal is immediately scarce. Metals Focus expects a supply surplus in 2027.

Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next scheduled data point is the US employment report for October, due Friday, November 6. Its potential effect on rate expectations and the dollar could matter for silver. For now, the market is balancing the possibility of stronger Indian physical demand against renewed inflation worries and unsettled financial-market sentiment.
