Silver's 6% Slide Puts US Data and the Fed's Next Move in the Driver's Seat

Precious-metals traders are heading into Thursday's US session with a clear set of catalysts in view, after silver's sharp midweek pullback left the metal nursing a sizeable gap to its yearly peak. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is due to publish the September producer price index at 08:30 ET, alongside fresh retail sales figures and the weekly initial jobless claims report — a trio of releases that should sharpen the picture on how resilient the American economy remains and how much pricing pressure is still building at the corporate level.

Those numbers land in a market that has already been jolted. Roughly two weeks ago, US consumer prices came in hotter than anticipated, and the reaction in metals was swift and unforgiving. On Wednesday, silver dropped 6.0%, settling the COMEX session at $55.80 per troy ounce. The decline has pushed the quote 54% below its 52-week high, leaving the metal at a level where the upcoming data will largely determine whether it can find its footing or extend the retreat.

Rates and the Dollar Set the Tone

Underneath the day-to-day noise, the Federal Reserve's policy trajectory remains the single biggest force shaping sentiment. The central bank's next scheduled rate meeting falls on October 27 and 28, and futures markets are showing their usual caution ahead of it. Ole S. Hansen of Saxo Bank told Forbes that speculation has been building that the Fed could raise its benchmark rate as soon as its October 28 gathering.

That prospect matters directly for silver, which pays no yield. Rising returns on fixed-income assets and a firm US dollar both tend to lift the opportunity cost of holding the metal, a headwind that has clearly been reflected in this week's price action.

Producers Paint a Mixed Operational Picture

Away from the macro debate, mining companies offered their latest quarterly scorecards, and the results diverged sharply. Aya Gold & Silver reported record output of 1.50 million ounces of silver from its Zgounder mine. Across all segments, the company's consolidated third-quarter production reached 2.03 million ounces of silver equivalent — a 51% jump compared with the same period a year earlier.

Endeavour Silver struck a more cautious note for the same quarter. The company reported production of 2,096,545 ounces of silver and sales of 1,900,368 ounces, while holding an inventory of 363,854 ounces of silver bars as of September 30. Endeavour also announced it would revise its full-year guidance, warning that output is likely to land at the low end of its range or slightly beneath it.

A Longer-Term Supply Question Takes Shape

Beyond the near-term flow of data and earnings, structural forces are drawing increasing attention. According to media reports, Deutsche Bank sees the possibility of a silver supply surplus returning in 2027 — the first in some time — driven by weakening industrial demand set against rising mine and recycling supply.

That view sits in contrast with the current year's balance. In its annual forecast dated April 15, the Silver Institute projected a sixth consecutive annual market deficit for 2026. Even so, the same report anticipated a modest 2% decline in industrial silver fabrication for 2026, to roughly 650 million ounces, partly attributed to softer demand from the photovoltaic sector. Media reports further suggest that global consumption in solar applications could fall by more than 20% in 2026, a development that would ease physical availability and help tilt the market toward a surplus over the medium term.

How this interplay between cooling industrial demand and the rate outlook evolves will be reassessed once Thursday's US releases hit the tape.
