Silver futures settled Friday at $57.13 an ounce on the COMEX, a level that masks a bruising stretch for the metal: prices sit 11% beneath their 50-day average of $64.31 and are down 19% since the start of the year.

The session's relative calm followed a run of softer US releases. Weaker retail sales and a subdued manufacturing gauge eased pressure across commodity markets, while earlier producer price figures had already taken some heat off the Federal Reserve. Treasury yields slipped and the dollar lost ground, tempering fears of another rate hike in October. The metal had been pummeled earlier by a 3.7% year-on-year consumer inflation reading and a 0.6% monthly gain, a combination that knocked silver down 6.09% in a single day.

Chart Levels Take Center Stage

With the macro backdrop still unsettled, attention has shifted to technical thresholds. Michael J. Kramer of Mott Capital Management sees further downside risk after the metal slipped below near-term support. A break of the $56.50 zone could open the way toward $50, he warned. Rufas Kamau of Equiti sketched a base case of trading between the mid-$50s and mid-$60s, with the path hinging on how aggressively future rate moves get priced in.

Kelvin Wong, senior market analyst at OANDA, told Reuters that inflation trends remain stubborn and markets are correspondingly twitchy about the rate outlook. Remarks from within the Federal Reserve have at times muted fears of an imminent tightening, though certainty is in short supply. Equity market turbulence and selling in technology names also prompted periodic rotation, with some participants returning to precious metals to hedge risk. Rising yields on fixed-income assets, however, keep weighing on the appeal of a metal that pays no coupon.

Mine Output Tells a Mixed Story

Production reports from silver miners painted an uneven picture of physical supply. Aya Gold & Silver posted record third-quarter 2026 output of 1.50 million ounces at its Zgounder mine, an 11% gain year on year, with consolidated performance of 2.03 million ounces of silver equivalent.

Elsewhere, operations were less smooth. First Majestic reported 3.4 million ounces for the quarter, held back by a twelve-day labor dispute at its San Dimas mine. Endeavour Silver produced just under 2.10 million ounces after a blockade temporarily halted work at Terronera in August. Guanajuato Silver, for its part, reported quarterly output of 392,138 ounces, with extraction at its Valenciana complex paused following an August decision to prioritize exploration work there.

Vault Stocks Edge Higher

On the demand side, the physical market loosened slightly. COMEX inventories rose by 1.2 million ounces to 333.2 million ounces in a survey dated October 14, split between 103.1 million ounces registered and 230.1 million ounces eligible.

Longer term, the structural picture remains supportive. Michael DiRienzo, president and CEO of The Silver Institute, pointed to demand from solar energy, electric mobility and AI data centers. The institute, together with Metals Focus, projects a global supply deficit of 46.3 million ounces for full-year 2026, wider than the prior year's 40.3 million-ounce shortfall.

Fed Meeting and CFTC Data on the Calendar

Two dates loom for direction. The Federal Reserve meets October 27-28, the next key test for rate policy, and the CFTC's positioning report for futures markets is due October 23. Whether the recent soft economic data can durably dampen rate expectations will likely decide silver's next move.
