Silver wrapped up a bruising week on a steadier note, with the front-month COMEX contract settling at $57.13 an ounce on Friday after a stretch that saw the metal swing violently on a hot US inflation print and then claw back some ground.

The week's defining moment came midweek, when US authorities reported that the consumer price index for September climbed 3.7% year on year — a touch above the 3.6% economists had pencilled in. The surprise triggered an immediate wave of selling across commodity desks as investors priced in a longer stretch of restrictive policy from the Federal Reserve. At one point silver slid below the $58 mark.

Yields and the Dollar Do the Damage

The pressure came chiefly through the currency and bond markets rather than from silver's own fundamentals. A firmer dollar made the metal more expensive for buyers outside the US, while rising yields on interest-bearing paper dulled the appeal of non-yielding assets such as silver.

By Thursday, though, the tide had turned. Helped by retreating bond yields, the COMEX front month recovered and closed the session up 3.2% at $57.60 an ounce. Even so, the price sits roughly 53% below its 52-week high of $121.78, a peak struck at the end of January.

Over the full week, the metal shed 6.5% of its value. That slide has widened the gap to its medium-term trend line — silver now trades 11% beneath its 50-day moving average.

Inventories Creep Higher at the Exchange

Physical availability at the trading hubs looks comfortable for now. CME warehouse reports showed total silver stocks at COMEX climbing to 333.75 million ounces on Thursday. Of that, 103.12 million ounces sat in the "registered" category, ready for immediate delivery, while 230.63 million ounces were classed as "eligible."

Delivery activity has been brisk in its own right. For the current October cycle, delivery notices at the New York exchange had accumulated to 1,286 contracts by Friday. At 5,000 troy ounces per contract, that works out to more than 6.4 million ounces earmarked for physical settlement.

Solar Sector Trims Its Silver Appetite

Away from the exchange floor, a quieter but potentially more consequential force is at work on the demand side. The London Bullion Market Association flagged an industry-wide push in photovoltaics to swap silver for cheaper metals such as copper. According to Deutsche Bank's estimates, cost savings and reworked production processes could cut silver consumption per solar cell by about 17% this year. Such substitution effects temper the long-run demand story, even as the market continues to grapple with a structural supply deficit.

On the corporate front, Guanajuato Silver posted consolidated output of 392,138 ounces of silver for the third quarter. Total production reached 683,675 ounces of silver equivalent, a 13.7% gain on the prior quarter. The company credited higher throughput at several operations, with work at its Valenciana complex paused.

Fed Meeting Looms Large

Sentiment found some relief at week's end as the US currency softened following the September inflation data. Remarks from Federal Reserve circles, reported by Reuters, helped steady rate expectations, with central bank officials signalling no urgency for an imminent tightening move.

All eyes now turn to the Federal Open Market Committee's regular meeting on 27–28 October, which is expected to set the tone for both the dollar and precious metals. Until that decision lands, economic data and yield moves are likely to dictate the room for manoeuvre in the silver market.
