Siemens Healthineers Exits Mainstream Ultrasound, Betting on Interventional Cardiology

Siemens Healthineers discontinues four ultrasound lines to focus on interventional imaging; shares rise 0.8% as ODDO BHF trims target to EUR 45.

Siemens Healthineers is pulling the plug on its general imaging ultrasound business, a strategic retreat that hands the mass-market segment to rivals and narrows the company's focus onto higher-barrier clinical specialties.

Gone from the portfolio are four established model lines: Acuson Sequoia, Redwood, Juniper and Maple. What stays tells the story of where management sees the future — the Acuson Origin, the P500 and the Freestyle, all geared toward interventional imaging and image-guided therapy. The company is also leaning harder into specialized software and catheters used by electrophysiologists and interventional cardiologists, with cardiovascular procedures, artificial intelligence and strategic partnerships flagged as core development priorities.

A crowded market, a deliberate exit

The rationale is straightforward: broad clinical ultrasound diagnostics has become a bruising, margin-thin battleground. Philips, GE HealthCare, Fujifilm and Canon have long held commanding share positions there, according to Reuters. Rather than fight for scraps in commoditized routine scanning, Siemens Healthineers is redeploying resources toward segments where technical specialization erects steeper entry barriers.

The numbers behind the decision are modest relative to the wider group. Reuters reports that the entire ultrasound business generated a little over EUR 600 million in revenue in 2025, roughly 9% of sales in the Precision Therapy division.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Healthineers?

Existing customers of the discontinued lines are not being abandoned. Service coverage — maintenance, software updates and transducers — will continue across the full remaining product lifecycle of installed systems, a commitment aimed at preventing disruption in clinics and practices that depend on the equipment.

Shares edge higher as analysts trim targets

Investors took the portfolio cleanup in stride. The stock added 0.8% in recent trading to change hands at EUR 39.80, leaving it about 21% above its 52-week low. The prior session closed at EUR 39.50, up 1.0% on the day. Year-to-date, however, the shares remain down 12%.

Analyst sentiment is mixed but not hostile. ODDO BHF lowered its price target to EUR 45 from EUR 47 while keeping an "Outperform" rating on the stock, according to media reports.

Buyback keeps a floor under the stock

Management is simultaneously working the capital markets to support the share price. Between October 5 and October 11, the company repurchased 50,000 of its own shares on Xetra. Since June 1, the cumulative buyback volume has reached 3,474,346 shares — a steady drain on the freely tradable supply that has accompanied the strategic overhaul.

The dual-track approach — shedding low-margin volume while concentrating on interventional procedures — amounts to a bet that specialization, not scale, will define the next phase of growth in medical imaging.
