Siemens Healthineers: Berenberg's Downgrade Casts Shadow Over November 5 Earnings Test

Siemens Healthineers has found itself caught between two competing narratives as its fiscal year draws to a close. On one side, the medical technology group continues to buy back its own shares at a steady clip, signaling internal confidence. On the other, analysts are growing increasingly cautious about the company's ability to convert revenue growth into meaningful profitability.
The stock ended Friday's session at EUR 39.12, a level that now carries symbolic weight. It sits almost precisely at Berenberg's freshly revised price target of EUR 39, after the Hamburg-based research house downgraded the shares from "Buy" to "Hold" and slashed its target from EUR 54. The message was blunt: much of the upside has already been priced in.
That move came just days after Deutsche Bank Research had reached a similar conclusion. Analyst Falko Friedrichs kept his "Hold" rating and EUR 39 target on Monday, acknowledging that solid results and organic revenue growth are likely in the upcoming fourth-quarter report but flagging weaker profitability as a persistent concern.
A Year of Consolidation
The cautious tone from analysts reflects a stock that has struggled to gain traction. Since the start of the year, Siemens Healthineers shares have shed 13 percent. The 52-week high of EUR 49.78 remains a distant memory, and market participants appear reluctant to commit fresh capital until they see hard evidence of a turnaround.
Yet the past week offered a modest reprieve. The stock climbed 3.2 percent on a weekly basis, lifted in part by the company's ongoing share repurchase program. In the trading week through October 4 alone, Siemens Healthineers acquired 49,987 of its own shares on the open market. Since the buyback launched in early June, the group has accumulated more than 3.42 million shares — a steady bid that has provided some support at current levels.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Healthineers?
The Margin Question Looms Large
What investors really want to know is whether Siemens Healthineers can translate demand for its products into durable earnings power. Revenue growth alone no longer satisfies the market when margins remain under pressure from rising costs.
The fourth-quarter profitability figure will serve as the key gauge. If the operating margin falls short of expectations, the optimism that has quietly built over recent weeks could evaporate quickly. Should management demonstrate that efficiency programs are delivering and scale effects are strengthening the earnings base, however, the groundwork for a re-rating would be laid.
Jefferies analyst Julien Dormois offered a more constructive view in late September, pointing to signs of accelerating momentum in the imaging division during the closing quarter. His firm maintained a "Buy" rating with a EUR 50 target, suggesting the path to annual goals remains achievable.
Product Pipeline Offers Counterweight
Supporting the bull case are several operational developments. Siemens Healthineers announced the global launch of its Innovance D-Dimer 2.0 diagnostic test in late September. The assay, which carries both CE marking and FDA clearance, is designed to help rule out venous thromboembolism.
The company also unveiled Accela, a radiotherapy solution built on the NeoArc platform and engineered for a broad range of clinical applications. Separately, the NAEOTOM Alpha.Peak system has been deployed at the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt, where its photon-counting computed tomography capabilities are being used for neuroradiological imaging of neurovascular structures.
Whether these innovations, combined with the continuing buyback, can shift analyst sentiment remains uncertain. The cautious camp warns that if the upcoming figures reveal that organic growth has come at the expense of pricing or higher spending, institutional investors may hold back from making significant new commitments.
November 5: The Decisive Date
For now, the stock's ability to hold around the EUR 39 mark keeps the door open for a recovery. A renewed bout of margin anxiety, though, could send the shares back toward their earlier lows.
The next major catalyst is already circled on calendars. On November 5, Siemens Healthineers will host its annual earnings press conference, presenting detailed results for the fiscal year just ended. That day will determine whether the signals of an imaging rebound are strong enough to finally put profitability worries to rest — or whether the skeptics, for now, have the better read.
