Sherwin-Williams Growth Fails to Carry Through to Profit as Suvinil Dilutes Margins
Published on 10/27/2026 at 23:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deSherwin-Williams delivered a bigger top line than Wall Street had penciled in for the third quarter of 2026, yet the bottom line told a different story. Revenue climbed 7.9% to $6.86 billion, beating the $6.78 billion consensus, but adjusted earnings per share of $3.63 fell short of the $3.69 analysts had expected. Net income slipped 1.5% year over year, and investors responded by sending the stock down 2.7% on the day.
The gap between sales and profit has put earnings quality squarely in the spotlight. Growth in volume alone is no longer enough to keep margins steady, with higher raw material and supply chain costs compounded by an unfavorable product mix. Adjusted EPS managed a gain of just 1.1% over the prior-year quarter.
Suvinil Boosts Revenue, Weighs on Profitability
Chief executive Heidi Petz pointed to growth across every reportable segment despite subdued market demand. What held back the result was the cost base and the composition of the business. The gross margin fell 140 basis points to 47.8%, while the adjusted EBITDA margin retreated to 20.5%.
The Suvinil acquisition sits at the heart of that tension. The deal contributed substantially to growth at Consumer Brands, lifting segment revenue 21.7%, but it diluted the gross margin—expanding the top line without delivering a proportional lift to profitability. Segment profit at Consumer Brands fell 7.1% even as its sales surged.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Sherwin-Williams?
Comparable store sales at the Paint Stores Group rose 3.9%, and Performance Coatings grew revenue by 8.8%, so the expansion was not confined to the Suvinil-boosted business. Even so, the margin trajectory shows that a broader revenue base on its own does not offset the cost burden.
Cash Generation Lags as Capital Returns Continue
Operating cash flow dropped 15.5% to $1.10 billion in the quarter, even as $749 million flowed back to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. Those returns stand in contrast to the weaker cash generation, though they do nothing to close the gap that opened up between revenue growth, earnings and cash flow during the period.
For the full year 2026, Sherwin-Williams now guides to adjusted EPS of $11.85 to $12.15. The company raised the low end of the range while trimming the top, a narrowing that stops short of an outright cut but caps the previously possible upper outcome. Management continues to expect full-year revenue growth in the mid-to-high single-digit percentage range and a mid-single-digit increase in the closing quarter. Demand is projected to stay muted through year-end and into 2027.
Analysts Split on Whether Pricing Can Outrun Costs
Jefferies remains focused on the drag from high mortgage rates on US housing activity, though it sees relative strength in residential repaint as well as protective and marine coatings. The firm reiterated a Hold rating with a $353 price target, flagging that raw material inflation rising from 6–9% to above 10% would be a critical development. Its central question is whether Sherwin-Williams can offset inflation through productivity and higher prices.
Sherwin-Williams at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Evercore ISI took a more bullish line a day earlier, expecting double-digit EPS growth even without a recovery in housing or home improvement. It points to the company's exposure to industrial and commercial markets as support, and considers another price increase early next year likely given higher oil and raw material costs. Evercore reaffirmed its Outperform rating with a $400 target and forecasts EPS of $13.40 for 2027.
The two houses differ less on diagnosing cost pressure than on confidence that the company can absorb it. The quarter's results offer a mixed verdict: the business is expanding, but earnings have yet to keep pace. The decisive test for investors now sits in the margins—further sales gains will only carry weight once pricing and productivity do more to counterbalance costs.
