Shell shares rose 2.3% on Wednesday as crude prices climbed, with Reuters reporting that Brent broke through the $115-a-barrel mark. The advance came not from any fresh company announcement but from the oil market itself: Huthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and mounting tension between the US, Israel and Iran revived fears of supply interruptions, lifting energy stocks across the board. BP gained alongside Shell, a reminder that the move was sector-wide rather than company-specific.

That distinction matters. Feared disruptions are not the same as disruptions that have already occurred, and the rally reflects how badly the market thinks supply could be hit — not how badly it has been. For Shell, the tailwind arrives on top of already lofty profit expectations, with refining and trading seen as the likely beneficiaries of war-driven volatility.

Refining margin sets a record bar

Reuters reported on Tuesday that Shell and other major oil companies are expected to post sharply higher quarterly earnings, pointing to refining and trading as the main engines. Shell itself has guided toward a refining margin of $42 per barrel for the third quarter of 2026 — a record high, but a forecast rather than a reported figure. A fat margin at the refinery gate does not, on its own, answer the question of group-wide profit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?

The trading and optimisation outlook was more measured: Shell expects performance in line with the prior quarter. A surge in headline earnings therefore does not require every division to fire at once.

Portfolio moves run alongside the price action

Operationally, Shell has had a busy stretch. On Wednesday it welcomed the UK government's decision to grant the production permit for the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, developed by Adura — the joint venture between Shell and Equinor that operates the project. According to the British government, gas could flow from the end of October, though that remains a prospect rather than production already under way.

On the divestment side, Shell agreed on 16 October to sell its French fuel-station network and associated mobility services to DCC Energy, Reuters reported. Three days earlier, on 13 October, it had consented to offload its entire stake in Shell Nigeria Gas Group to Vaaris Energy, a deal covering domestic gas distribution for which no price was disclosed. Both agreements remain a step short of completed sales.

October 29 is the date that counts

Shell will publish third-quarter 2026 results and announce an interim dividend on 29 October 2026, with the release scheduled for 07:00 GMT. That date is where the oil-price-driven trading of recent days meets the actual operating record. Until then, crude's climb underpins the market backdrop — but whether Shell has converted it into the earnings jump investors expect will only be settled by the numbers.
