Shell's Refining Margin Guidance Doubles to $42 as October 29 Results Loom
Published on 10/24/2026 at 13:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deShell shares climbed 2.3% yesterday, but the gain owed nothing to a fresh company announcement. Instead, the stock rode a sector-wide wave as renewed fears of supply disruptions pushed crude prices higher, with Reuters reporting Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and an oil accident in the United Arab Emirates sharpening concerns about Middle East supply.
Brent settled up 3.14% at $116.72 a barrel, a repricing of supply risk rather than any upgrade to Shell's own earnings outlook. For investors, that distinction matters: geopolitical tailwinds explain the sector's lift but say nothing yet about how much extra income Shell can actually book from them.
Refining Guidance Points to a Stronger Quarter
A company-specific signal does exist, and it sits in the processing and trading business rather than in the headline oil price. In its third-quarter 2026 interim update dated October 7, Shell raised its indicative refining margin outlook to $42 per barrel from $24 previously.
That revision shifts the focus toward how much Shell earned from crude processing and trading as market conditions tightened. Reuters reported on Tuesday that major oil companies are expected to post significantly higher quarterly profits, with the Iran war having supported refining and trading results. For Shell, that remains an expectation ahead of the release — not a reported profit.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?
Integrated Gas carries its own operational targets. Shell guided to production of 740–780 kboe/d, and for LNG liquefaction it projected volumes of 7.2–7.6 million tonnes. Both figures are forecasts rather than final production tallies, meaning the upcoming report will test the gas business alongside refining and trading.
Portfolio Moves Run on a Separate Track
Away from the oil market, Shell continues to reshape its holdings. On October 13 the company agreed to sell its entire stake in the Shell Nigeria Gas Group to Vaaris Energy. The business runs domestic gas distribution, and the parties disclosed no sale price. The agreement concerns the future composition of the portfolio and should not be conflated with yesterday's share-price move; a completed sale is also not the same thing as a signed deal.
Separately, Reuters reported, citing the Financial Times, that a possible sale of Infineum is under consideration. The chemicals joint venture is owned 50-50 by Shell and ExxonMobil, and the reported potential value is around $8 billion. Neither company has announced a transaction, so the disposal remains a strategic option rather than a secured inflow of cash.
Shell at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
One Date, Two Tests
Shell will publish third-quarter 2026 results and its interim dividend announcement on October 29 at 07:00 GMT, tying the earnings verdict to a concrete payout decision. Until then, the sector-wide tailwind and the announced or contemplated portfolio changes stand as separate forces. The central question after yesterday's advance is whether the published figures confirm the more favorable business conditions the company has guided toward.
