Shell's India Exit Nears Closing as Barclays Lifts Target on LNG Confidence
Published on 10/09/2026 at 14:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deAditya Birla Renewables is lining up $1.5 billion in rupee-denominated borrowings to fund its agreed purchase of Solenergi Power, the Shell subsidiary that houses the Sprng Energy group, according to a Reuters report. The overall deal carries a price tag of $1.8 billion, though the divestment has yet to be formally completed.
The sale forms part of Shell's broader push to deploy capital more selectively, and it lands just as the energy major prepares to open its books. Full third-quarter results are scheduled for release on October 29.
Barclays Sees More Room to Run
Confidence in Shell's equity story got a fresh boost on Wednesday, when Barclays analyst Lydia Rainforth raised her price target on the stock to 4,950 GBp from 4,700 GBp while keeping an "Overweight" rating. The upgrade chimes with signals coming from the top of the company.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?
Speaking Tuesday at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London, CEO Wael Sawan struck an upbeat tone on liquefied natural gas. He acknowledged near-term headwinds and an expected wave of new supply, but argued the underlying fundamentals for LNG remain as attractive as ever. Sawan made clear that the fuel stays a cornerstone of Shell's portfolio: geopolitical tensions and cyclical swings may cloud short-term visibility, yet long-term demand underpins the business model. Gas has traditionally served as a dependable earnings engine for the group, helping offset volatility elsewhere.
Refining Margins and Storm Disruptions
Downstream, the picture brightened. Reuters reported that tighter fuel supplies tied to the Middle East conflict pushed the indicative refining margin to $42 per barrel, up from $24 in the prior quarter. In oil and gas trading, Shell expects results broadly in line with the previous quarter.
Operations, however, face scattered interruptions. In the Gulf of Mexico, the outer bands of Tropical Storm Isaias prompted precautionary evacuations and temporary production halts on platforms including Mars, Olympus, Ursa, Vito and Appomattox. At Qatar's Pearl gas-to-liquids facility, Shell has managed a partial restart, though shipments there continue to hinge on regional security conditions.
What's Next for Investors
Shell is thus heading into its interim report with a mix of firm gas demand, elevated processing margins and weather-driven outages — a combination management aims to balance through the strength of its integrated portfolio. In today's trading the shares changed hands at EUR 44.31, a touch below the previous session's 52-week high of EUR 44.80. With the India transaction still awaiting formal completion and detailed quarterly figures due at month's end, shareholders have two clear catalysts on the near horizon.
