SAP's Dual Narrative: Buybacks and AI Ambitions Collide in a Week of Contrasting Signals

SAP's stock ended Monday's session at 188.30 euros, up 5.6 percent, capping a week in which the software giant repurchased 1,823,857 of its own shares through Xetra. The buyback, disclosed Monday as part of SAP's ongoing repurchase program, falls roughly in line with volumes seen in prior weeks—hardly enough on its own to explain the magnitude of the share price move.
What actually drove the rally is less clear-cut. A Reuters report, relayed by Manager Magazin, revealed that private equity firm Silver Lake is in talks to acquire U.S. software provider Workday. SAP is neither buyer nor target in those discussions. Yet the news stoked speculation across the entire software sector, potentially emboldening SAP investors to bet on further consolidation and richer valuations industry-wide.
A separate catalyst emerged the same day from Goldman Sachs's conference stage, where CEO Christian Klein made the case for SAP's strategic edge in artificial intelligence. Klein told investors that SAP controls the core business data and ERP process logic that large language models require for productive tasks. In management's view, mastering operational workflows—not model architecture alone—determines AI's real-world utility in the enterprise. Language models lack inherent understanding of complex business processes; only when linked to established ERP systems can digital assistants independently handle procurement, sales, or finance tasks.
Klein placed particular emphasis on agent-based AI, systems designed not merely to generate text but to autonomously trigger and execute multi-step processes. Because SAP administers the interfaces and access rights of core systems, the CEO sees the company occupying a pivotal position relative to pure model providers.
Building the Data Foundation
To reinforce its technological base, SAP completed the acquisition of Prior Labs more than a month ago. The company intends to develop the specialist into a leading laboratory for structured data over several years, ensuring that enterprise information becomes usable for advanced algorithms without friction.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?
Market experts acknowledge the potential but urge swift execution. On September 8, UBS reaffirmed its "Neutral" rating on SAP with a price target of 201 euros, noting that integrating AI assistants into existing customer environments still presents demanding work for the software house.
Support for the transformation comes from sustained growth in the core business. For the second quarter of 2026, management reported a 27 percent increase in Current Cloud Backlog to 22.9 billion euros. These contractually secured future revenues give SAP the financial latitude to advance its AI architecture and guide customers through the transition to automated processes.
Operational Wins and Security Updates
Beyond the stock chart, SAP continues to expand its operational footprint. Defense contractor Lockheed Martin is broadening its workforce transformation using SAP SuccessFactors solutions—a partnership announced roughly a month ago that has since coincided with a markedly weaker share price. In early September, technology group HARTING also signed a long-term contract with SAP.
On the security front, SAP released 19 Security Notes during its most recent Patch Day, including four vulnerabilities classified as critical. Such monthly updates form part of routine operations and likely had minimal impact on the stock.
Tuesday sees SAP hosting its Connect Day for Consumer Products & Retail in Zurich, an event aimed at retail and consumer goods customers that is more likely to influence the stock over the medium term than immediately.
The distance from the 50-day moving average now stands at 13 percent, confirming that the recent advance extends the short-term recovery that began in the summer—though the shares remain well below their 52-week high from October 2025.
For short-term oriented investors, the central question is whether Monday's rally represents a durable turning point or whether it fades quickly, carried by sector enthusiasm without a company-specific news anchor from SAP itself.
