SAP's Buyback Tally and Cloud Backlog Tell One Story; Its Product Launches Tell Another

SAP's 2026 buyback reaches 9,136,956 shares as Q3 cloud backlog rises 28% to €24.1B; analysts are positive, but Q4 results on 28 January 2027 remain the test.

SAP kept its share repurchase machine running through the final days of October, picking up another 50,000 of its own shares in the last week of the month. That brings the cumulative total under the 2026 buyback programme to 9,136,956 shares. The disclosure, released on Tuesday, confirms an existing capital-return plan rather than announcing a fresh one — and on its own it says nothing about where demand, revenue or earnings are headed.

For that, investors have to look elsewhere. The operating picture arrived on 21 October with third-quarter 2026 results, which put the Current Cloud Backlog at €24.1 billion, up 28%. Cloud revenue climbed 26% and total revenue rose 13%, leaving the cloud unit growing at roughly double the pace of the group as a whole. Management now expects both cloud revenue and cloud-and-software revenue to land at the top end of their respective 2026 guidance ranges — an expectation, not a closed-out full-year result.

A Product Barrage With No Revenue Attached Yet

The pipeline of announcements has been steady. At SAP TechEd on 27 October the company rolled out AI extensions for Joule, Joule Studio and the SAP Business AI Platform, with Joule Studio aimed at building and extending AI agents alongside added governance controls. More recently it declared "SAP Incentive Management, Starter Edition" available, and together with Cohere it has pushed Cohere North into general availability on the Business AI Platform, pitched in part at regulated industries.

None of that translates into a revenue line by itself. A shipped application creates an offering; only customer adoption turns it into a sturdier case for the growth story. The distinction matters because the wider software sector is still wrestling with worries about AI-driven disruption — a theme Reuters flagged as running through the broader market, alongside the US midterm elections.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

What the Tape Actually Said

SAP shares gained 2.5% in Wednesday's session, but Reuters placed the advance in the context of a mildly firmer European software backdrop that also lifted Dassault Systèmes, while tech stocks more broadly lagged. In other words, the move reflects sector sentiment rather than a verdict on any single product release.

Analyst sentiment has been tilting constructive regardless. Goldman Sachs raised its SAP price target to €258 on 23 October and reiterated its "Buy" rating. Erste Group followed on 30 October, upgrading the stock from "Hold" to "Buy," according to media reports. Both add to the positive case without substituting for evidence that the new offerings are actually generating demand.

The January Reckoning

The next hard checkpoint is 28 January 2027, when SAP publishes preliminary results for the fourth quarter and for fiscal 2026 as a whole. That report will show whether the company truly delivers at the upper end of its revenue ranges — and whether product launches have begun converting into customer decisions.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Until then, the buyback disclosures and the product news flow should be read for what they are: evidence of capital returns and an expanding portfolio, not proof of future growth. The bar for convincing results rises if AI disruption fears gain the upper hand; if customers embrace the new tools, the launches start to look like more than headlines. Wednesday's share price move settles none of it.
