The software giant's stock has spent the summer navigating a curious mix of tailwinds and technicalities. A Reuters report suggesting that private equity firm Silver Lake is in takeover talks with US rival Workday sent ripples through the sector earlier this week, with SAP shares briefly claiming the top spot in the DAX on Monday. That speculative energy, combined with a routine share buyback disclosure on Tuesday and a fresh round of personnel changes, has kept the stock in a sturdy trading range — even as it eased slightly to €180.68 on Wednesday from €181.90 the previous session.

A Patch Day With a Maximum-Severity Blemish

On the operational front, SAP used its monthly Patch Day on August 14 to close 28 security vulnerabilities. The headline item was a critical flaw in the "Data Hub Adapter" module of the Commerce Cloud, carrying a CVSS score of 10.0 — the highest severity rating possible. The vulnerability could have enabled unauthorized access, though the company says it has since been remediated. For investors, the episode is a reminder that security remains a permanent risk factor for a firm whose software sits at the core of thousands of enterprises, even when the specific incident is resolved.

Restructuring Around AI

The security work comes amid an internal reorganization aimed at sharpening SAP's AI focus. In early July, the company shifted operational responsibility for parts of its Product & Engineering organization from Muhammad Alam to CEO Christian Klein on an interim basis. Two new units have emerged from that move — the SAP Business AI Platform & CTO and the SAP Autonomous Suite — both reporting directly to Klein, a clear signal that AI strategy is being consolidated at the highest level of the company.

That restructuring follows a string of acquisitions. SAP closed the purchase of Dremio, an open data lakehouse platform provider, shortly after announcing its deal for Prior Labs, a pioneer in tabular foundation models. The company plans to invest more than €1 billion over the next four years to build Prior Labs into a leading frontier AI center for structured data, while keeping it as a standalone entity. The May acquisition of Reltio, a master data management specialist, rounds out the shopping spree.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Guidance Trimmed, But the Cloud Engine Hums

The financial impact of those deals showed up in the second-quarter results released on July 23. SAP trimmed its 2026 non-IFRS operating profit guidance to a range of €11.8 billion to €12.2 billion, down from the previous €11.9 billion to €12.3 billion, citing dilution of more than €100 million from the Dremio and Prior Labs acquisitions.

The profit revision, however, masks a robust operational picture. Current cloud backlog jumped 26 percent on a currency-adjusted basis to €22.9 billion, while cloud revenue grew 24 percent to €6.28 billion. The core Cloud ERP Suite expanded even faster, at 27 percent, and total revenue rose 11 percent. The cloud revenue outlook of €25.8 billion to €26.2 billion remains unchanged, with the company expecting growth this year on par with 2025 and acceleration only in 2027.

Analysts Hold the Line

The reaction from the sell-side to the lowered profit forecast was measured. Barclays trimmed its price target from €255 to €220 in late July, citing near-term cost uncertainties, but maintained an "Overweight" rating. The broader consensus remains firmly constructive: across 28 houses, there are 24 buy ratings and four holds, with not a single sell recommendation on the books. The average price target sits near €203, comfortably above the stock's current level of around €182.

Regulatory Tailwinds and Ecosystem Expansion

SAP has also enjoyed a cleaner regulatory environment. The European Commission concluded its review of maintenance and support guidelines for on-premise solutions in early July, a development the company welcomed. Germany's cartel office had already decided in late July not to open an abuse-of-process case against the company — a decision that has coincided with a 7.9 percent gain in the stock since.

The company continues to widen its partner ecosystem as well. The Klinikum Stuttgart signed on in early August for a strategic partnership with SAP and Avelios Medical to integrate clinical and commercial processes on SAP S/4HANA. Broadbean also entered a partnership under the SAP PartnerEdge Build program in early August, embedding talent management solutions directly into the SAP ecosystem. These agreements rarely move the share price on their own, but they underscore the breadth of the cloud platform strategy.

With a market capitalization of €207.46 billion, SAP remains one of the heaviest weights in the DAX. The next major catalyst is the third-quarter earnings release expected in October, which will show whether the cloud momentum can persist under the weight of recent acquisitions. Preliminary full-year results for 2026 are scheduled for January 27, 2027 — until then, sector consolidation chatter, the buyback program, and the integration of the latest deals are likely to shape the narrative.
