SAP's AI Agent Rollout and a Defense-Industry Win Collide With a Stock Still Searching for Traction

Christian Klein used a conference stage this week to put a number on SAP's artificial-intelligence ambitions: 400 AI agents are set to arrive in September, with a second wave to follow in the autumn. The CEO framed the push around automating complex business processes — software that doesn't merely digitize workflows but increasingly runs them on its own. For shareholders, that announcement arguably carries more weight than the security patches rolled out the previous Tuesday, which the market had already digested.
The agent rollout fits a playbook SAP has followed for years, and if the autumn batch lands as promised, it should reignite the debate over the company's cloud and AI growth trajectory.
Gartner Recognition and a Nine-Month Separation
Confirmation of SAP's standing in one of its core franchises arrived on 4 September, when the Walldorf-based group was named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud HCM Suites for 1,000+ Employee Enterprises — the eleventh consecutive time it has held that position. The streak underscores an entrenched role in cloud-based HR software for large enterprises, a segment that dovetails with the broader AI narrative as SAP SuccessFactors absorbs more AI functionality.
Operational proof points have been stacking up beyond the HR suite. Earlier in September, SAP and Irish dairy group Tirlán reported the completion of an independent SAP landscape within nine months, a carve-out from former partner Glanbia that SAP says proceeded without operational disruption. Complex system separations of this kind are routine among large customers, and pulling one off cleanly speaks to SAP's execution capabilities.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?
Lockheed Martin Signs On, HARTING Accelerates
The customer wins keep coming from unexpected corners. US defense contractor Lockheed Martin will adopt SAP SuccessFactors Solutions to overhaul its HR processes as part of a sweeping workforce transformation — a notable endorsement from a security-sensitive industrial giant. Days earlier, German connectivity specialist HARTING said it would speed up its cloud transformation with RISE with SAP. Together, the two deals illustrate how SAP is expanding its cloud and transformation business across sectors, from mid-sized manufacturers to defense primes.
There is also a signal from inside the house. A SAP management board member bought 1,500 shares in late August at 178.30 euros apiece, a total outlay of 267,450 euros. Market watchers often read such insider purchases as a vote of confidence in the company's own strategy, though they hardly amount to a buy recommendation on their own.
A Stock That Hasn't Caught Up
The equity, meanwhile, has yet to reflect the run of good news. SAP closed Friday at 178.50 euros, down 15 percent since the start of the year and 19 percent over a twelve-month horizon. Measured against the record high of 242.00 euros set on 23 October 2025, the shares sit 26 percent below their peak.
Analyst coverage has been slow to catch up with events. UBS last rated the stock "Neutral" with a 201-euro price target roughly five weeks ago — a call that predates the recent product announcements and no longer captures the current news flow.
That leaves investors weighing a familiar question: whether September's AI agent wave actually converts customers in meaningful numbers, or whether it stays a slide in a presentation. The eleventh Gartner Leader placement at least suggests SAP remains a benchmark in its core HR software business. Whether that is enough to restore faith in the AI strategy will only become clear once the second agent wave reaches the market this autumn — and once the customer wins start showing up in the quarterly numbers.
