SAP shares closed at €209.40 on Friday after surrendering 3.4%, a decline that had nothing to do with the company's own order book and everything to do with the mood surrounding artificial intelligence. The drop came as a worldwide selloff in AI and semiconductor stocks dragged the DAX sharply lower, leaving Europe's largest software maker among the losers on Germany's benchmark index.

The explanations offered across German media converged on the same theme without naming a company-specific trigger. Public broadcaster tagesschau tied the sector-wide selling to doubts over the profitability of heavy AI spending and the prospect of political headwinds for expanding AI infrastructure. Reuters likewise framed uncertainty around AI equities as the backdrop to the global market slide, while dpa-AFX pointed to fears of tighter AI regulation and possible brakes on growth weighing on German stocks. Börse Stuttgart's market report added concerns about the future momentum of AI investment and political resistance to data-center buildouts, describing a worldwide exodus from AI and chip names.

A €2 Billion Bet on Cheaper Models

Against that nervous backdrop, SAP has been quietly making the case that it can spend less on AI, not more. Roughly two weeks ago the company said it would swap out several expensive AI models inside its own products for cheaper alternatives. Finance chief Dominik Asam told Reuters the switch should deliver efficiency gains of more than €2 billion over two years — a target that now faces its first real test in a market openly questioning whether anyone can earn a return on AI at all.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Sovereign Cloud, Built With NTT

On the product front, SAP announced on October 28 a planned collaboration with NTT covering sovereign cloud and SAP Business AI. The initial focus is on sovereign cloud capabilities for regulated industries, with the two partners intending to combine SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site with infrastructure and operational services managed by NTT. The arrangement spans both sovereign cloud offerings and AI functionality.

Developer Tools Unveiled at TechEd

A day earlier, at SAP TechEd on October 27, the company rolled out enhancements for developers and AI agents alongside new governance features. The AI capabilities presented at the event touch Joule, the SAP Business AI Platform and SAP Business Data Cloud, according to the company. Among the additions are tools that let developers build and control AI agents, plus new tabular AI models. SAP also announced support for more than 70 AI models and functions enabling the autonomous execution of business processes, with updates extending to Joule Studio and Joule Work. Product development and oversight of AI applications thus arrive in the same package.

Investors will have to wait some time for the next hard financial datapoint: SAP has scheduled preliminary results for the fourth quarter and full-year 2026 for January 28, 2027.
