SAP Puts Contracted Cloud Pipeline and Margins on Trial With Q3 Report Due Tonight

SAP has given investors two very different things to chew on this week: a fresh artificial-intelligence feature for its certification program, and a quarterly earnings release that will test whether the company's cloud momentum is translating into profit. The software maker said yesterday it will add AI-driven role-play exercises as an additional route for customers and partners to renew certifications, supplementing — not replacing — the existing knowledge tests. The capability is slated to cover more than 100 certifications.

That announcement speaks to product development rather than the bottom line. It shows where SAP intends to deploy AI next, but it offers no read-through on cloud growth or on whether the company will hit its full-year targets. For that, the market must wait until this evening.

Numbers Land at 22:05 MESZ

SAP plans to publish its third-quarter 2026 results at 22:05 MESZ, with a conference call for financial analysts and investors starting at 23:00 MESZ. The figures investors are watching most closely are the Current Cloud Backlog, cloud revenue growth and any confirmation of the annual outlook. Those are expectations, not reported results.

The backlog matters because it captures cloud revenue already locked in by contract for the coming twelve months. It therefore says something different from quarterly revenue: the top line describes business booked during the period, while the backlog indicates how well future cloud growth is contractually underpinned. Looking at revenue alone would blur that distinction.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

According to media reports, analysts expect the backlog to grow 24.7%. Cloud revenue is forecast at EUR 6.6 billion, up 25% year on year.

Profitability Is the Second Hurdle

Demand is only half the story. The consensus estimate for operating profit stands at just over EUR 2.9 billion, which would mark a 15% increase from a year earlier. That puts the operating margin under scrutiny as well: solid cloud results are expected, but profitability is seen as the harder challenge. A convincing verdict on SAP therefore requires more than a growing cloud business — it needs that growth to show up in earnings.

SAP's own 2026 guidance sets the frame. The company is targeting currency-adjusted cloud revenue growth of 23–25%, an increase in adjusted operating profit of 13–17%, and free cash flow of around EUR 10 billion. The differently defined measures should not be conflated: the cloud outlook is explicitly stated on a currency-adjusted basis, while the operating figure is an adjusted metric.

Analysts Have Kept Their Distance

Recent broker actions hardly paint a uniformly bullish picture. JPMorgan left SAP at "Neutral" on October 15, as reported by dpa-AFX, without issuing a new price target. Two days earlier, AlphaValue/Baader Europe cut its rating from "Add" to "Reduce," according to media reports.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Reuters, meanwhile, frames the upcoming reports from SAP, Tesla and Meta as a test of stock-market enthusiasm for AI. In SAP's case, the yardsticks are AI demand and the cloud backlog.

The question for investors is thus not simply whether SAP reports growth. It is whether contracted demand, cloud revenue and earnings all pull in the same direction and support the annual targets — a combination that would allow a grounded assessment beyond the broader AI mood. The certification initiative provides operational context for that story, but it cannot stand in for the hard numbers due tonight.
