SAP shares fell 3.4% on Friday, caught between two forces pulling on software valuations at once: Oracle's sobering outlook for its cloud business and a worldwide retreat from AI and semiconductor stocks.

Oracle's comments, reported by Reuters, did the more targeted damage. The company flagged slower growth in its SaaS revenue, higher capital expenditure and additional debt raising for fiscal 2027 — a combination that rippled through European software names. One trader singled out the SaaS guidance in particular as a negative industry signal for SAP.

The broader backdrop was no kinder. The Tagesschau reported a global selloff in AI and chip stocks that weighed on the German market as well, with doubts about the profitability of AI investments cited as the driver.

A Cost-Cutting Answer to the Skepticism

Against that mood, SAP has been assembling its own response — and it centers on making AI cheaper to run. On October 28, the company told Reuters it plans to swap out some expensive AI models inside its own products for lower-cost alternatives. Management expects that shift to contribute to more than €2 billion in AI-related efficiency gains over two years.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

The wording matters for investors weighing the stock. SAP frames the model swap as a contributor to those efficiency gains, not a guarantee of them — leaving execution as the open question. If cheaper models deliver the promised economic benefit, the plan strengthens the case for SAP's AI strategy. If the contribution falls short, the thesis weakens.

Migration Tools and a Sovereign Cloud Pact

SAP has also been building out the plumbing that makes such transformations possible. On the same day, it unveiled four AI-powered migration and modernization assistants, available to early-adopter customers and already supporting cloud ERP transitions. The tools span data management, test management, modernization of custom code and business configuration.

Alongside that, SAP and NTT announced a collaboration on sovereign cloud and SAP Business AI aimed at regulated industries. The plan includes connecting SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site with NTT-managed infrastructure operated by NTT. Whether that partnership produces concrete offerings — rather than remaining an announcement — is another piece of the execution puzzle.

The Next Hard Data Point

For now, the market's skepticism about AI spending and SAP's efficiency ambitions are pulling in opposite directions. Persistent worries of the kind Reuters described could keep pressure on the valuation, making tangible progress all the more important.

The next scheduled checkpoint is January 28, 2027, when SAP reports preliminary results for the fourth quarter and the full 2026 fiscal year. An analyst and investor conference and a balance-sheet press conference are planned as well. Until then, investors will be measuring the gap between promised efficiency and delivered results.
