SAP Balances AI Rollout and Patent Setback Against Two Bullish Analyst Calls
Published on 10/18/2026 at 16:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deSAP spent the week straddling two very different storylines. On one side, the German software maker pushed further into artificial intelligence and financial workflows. On the other, a Munich court ruling handed rival Celonis a win that curbs how SAP can use one feature in Germany. Analysts, for their part, looked past the legal noise and lifted their price targets.
A Patchday, and a Feature SAP Can No Longer Use in Germany
SAP disclosed on Thursday that its October security patchday covered 16 new security notes and four GitHub Security Advisories. The patches themselves went out on Tuesday; Thursday's statement merely documented what had already shipped rather than flagging anything new.
Separate from that housekeeping is the Signavio Process Intelligence ruling. As Handelsblatt reported on Wednesday, a court found that a function within the product infringes a Celonis patent, and SAP is barred from using the technology in Germany. The scope matters: the injunction covers the contested technology on German soil, not Signavio Process Intelligence as a whole. Nor do the security updates and the patent verdict intersect — releasing patches does nothing to lift the legal restriction.
TD Cowen and Barclays Both Raise Their Marks
TD Cowen analyst Derrick Wood lifted his SAP price target to $250 from $205 on Thursday while reaffirming a "Buy" rating. The move pairs a higher target with an unchanged recommendation. Wood pointed to sustained momentum in cloud migrations as the rationale — a case built on customers shifting to the cloud rather than on any quantified revenue contribution from the new AI tools.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?
Barclays had already moved two days earlier. Analyst Raimo Lenschow nudged his target to $243 from $242 on Tuesday, keeping an "Overweight" rating. Both houses raised their marks without touching their calls. Neither upgrade speaks to what the Signavio restriction might mean for the business.
Joule Work Ships, Financial Tools Announced
The product backdrop is a mix of rolled-out and promised. SAP unveiled Joule Work, its AI working surface for interacting with SAP solutions and handling both SAP and third-party data, on October 6 at SAP Connect, and began rolling it out to customers. Alongside it came word of additional Joule Assistants and functions for finance processes, including SAP Enterprise Financial Consolidation and extra assistants for finance, governance and compliance work.
The distinction between shipped and announced is the one to watch. Joule Work is in rollout; SAP Pay and the added finance offerings have only been announced. Neither should be read as a completed launch, and product announcements on their own do not establish incremental revenue.

What Comes Next
The next marker on the calendar is October 21, when SAP reports third-quarter 2026 results. How the product push translates into business performance will hinge on those figures as much as on new features. For now, the picture holds three strands that don't cancel each other out: product progress, higher analyst targets, and an injunction already in force.
