SanDisk's NAND Story Gets Buried Under a Memory-Sector Avalanche
Published on 10/17/2026 at 04:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deA 7.2% slide to EUR 1,160.00 on Friday capped a brutal stretch for SanDisk shareholders, leaving the stock 44% below its 52-week high. Yet the selling wave that swept through semiconductor names this week has less to do with SanDisk's own order book than with a single question gripping the market: will the billions poured into artificial intelligence infrastructure ever pay off?
The trigger came from China. Reports of technological advances at ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) in memory-cell architectures rattled investors already jittery about interest rates, and chipmakers finished among the weakest performers on global exchanges, according to AP. Reuters reported that memory and chip stocks came under heavy selling pressure once news of CXMT's manufacturing progress circulated. SanDisk was swept up in the downdraft — down 5.6% at one point to EUR 1,180.00, and 16% below its 50-day moving average of EUR 1,405.40. Tuesday alone had already cost the stock 4.3% when the first CXMT reports surfaced.
A Distinction the Market Is Skipping
Here is where the selling looks indiscriminate. SanDisk sells storage products; the CXMT developments concern memory technology. Those are different slices of the semiconductor pie, and lumping them together punishes SanDisk for a rival's progress in a segment it does not address. The broader reassessment of AI spending returns is a legitimate debate, but it is being applied to SanDisk with a broad brush rather than a scalpel.
Quantitative models have hardly helped. Zacks Research upgraded the shares from "Hold" to "Strong Buy" on Tuesday, only for Weiss Ratings to cut its rating a day later. Both signals largely mirror the recent price weakness rather than offering a real read on the company's operating health.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?
Meta VR Deal Offers a Counterweight
On the business front, SanDisk holds a position that the selloff does not reflect: it is the exclusive supplier of advanced flash memory solutions for Meta's virtual-reality glasses, with launch slated for spring 2027. Whether that long-term partnership can offset near-term market anxiety is a question market watchers are actively debating.
Hard numbers arrive soon. SanDisk has scheduled its fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings call for October 29, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time. Management is expected to detail order trends in the AI business and offer its read on international competition — precisely the clarity investors need after a week of rumor-driven trading. The company has also filed its annual report for securities holders, a reminder that the real business, not market chatter, will ultimately set the share price.
Shareholders have another date circled: the annual general meeting is set for November 17, 2026, according to filed documents.
Friday's retreat extends a difficult run for chipmakers into the weekend. For SanDisk, the gap between what the market fears and what the company actually sells has rarely looked wider — and the October 29 call is the moment to close it.
