Samsung's 2nm Wait Stretches On While AI Funding Fears Steal the Headlines

Samsung Electronics shares fell 3.3% on Thursday as investors fixated on whether the massive buildout of artificial intelligence infrastructure can actually be financed — a sector-wide valuation question that has little to do with the chipmaker's own operating performance. The decline came amid broader weakness across South Korean semiconductor names, with media reports suggesting funding doubts are now drowning out improved earnings expectations for the industry at large.

That distinction matters. The selloff is not a fresh operational warning from Samsung. Rather, it reflects mounting skepticism about the durability of AI capital spending, and better profit forecasts for chipmakers have not been enough to offset it.

Foundry Runs at Two Speeds

Beneath the market noise, Samsung's contract manufacturing business is telling a more nuanced story. Its 4nm production lines are running at virtually full capacity, according to media reports, and the company is simultaneously hunting for new customers for its 5nm process. Contracts with global technology giants for 2nm production, however, are slipping.

High utilization is a welcome operational signal, but it should not be conflated with signed deals at the more advanced nodes. The two developments involve different manufacturing technologies, which is precisely why a blanket read on the foundry unit falls short.

HBM4E Clears a Hurdle

A separate positive signal emerged in memory. Reports dated October 9 indicated that Samsung's twelve-layer HBM4E memory passed quality validation at Nvidia and at major data center operators. Even so, technical qualification is not the same as commercial execution — a passed customer test represents progress, but it yields no concrete shipment volumes or added revenue on its own.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Samsung Electronics?

Taken together with the 2nm delays, the picture across Samsung's reported customer projects is anything but uniform.

The Numbers Behind the Noise

Samsung published preliminary consolidated figures for the third quarter of 2026 on October 8, posting revenue of 195 trillion won and operating profit of 107.4 trillion won. Those figures are preliminary, not final. The corresponding earnings conference is scheduled for October 29 at 10:00 KST, giving investors the next announced occasion to assess how the business is actually tracking.

Company results and today's sector anxiety operate on different planes: the numbers describe the quarter just ended, while market skepticism targets the sustainability of future infrastructure spending.

Memory Roadmap and a Share Transfer

At the OCP Global Summit on October 12, Samsung laid out its strategy for next-generation memory products, including high-performance memory, CXL-based memory expansion and new SSDs. The presentation sketches technological direction rather than economic success.

Separately, a mandatory disclosure published on October 13 documented an agreement under which Hong Ra-hee will gift Lee Jae-yong 11,158,000 Samsung shares, with the transfer slated for November 12. That planned transaction stands apart from both operating developments and today's sector pressure.

For now, the takeaway for investors is a careful separation of three things: full capacity at mature nodes, reported technical milestones, and contracts actually signed. It is the funding question hanging over AI that dominates the tape — and neither Samsung's preliminary results nor its memory roadmap does anything to change that.
