Investors who have spent months watching Salesforce trade with a defensive posture got a sudden reminder of its upside potential on Wednesday, as shares rocketed higher on the back of a quarterly report that beat expectations on nearly every metric.

The cloud software giant closed the session with a gain of roughly 21 percent, with the stock changing hands at 213.75 euros. That move, triggered by Tuesday's after-the-bell earnings release, marked one of the most dramatic single-day rallies in the company's recent history and helped lift sentiment across the broader software sector, according to Reuters.

The Numbers Behind the Move

For the fiscal second quarter of 2027, Salesforce reported revenue of 11.35 billion dollars, while adjusted earnings per share came in at 5.90 dollars. The bottom line got a meaningful assist from strategic investments, which contributed 2.53 dollars per share to the adjusted figure. Even stripping out that one-time boost, the underlying operating performance landed comfortably within the range of a healthy quarter.

On a GAAP basis, earnings per share were 4.29 dollars. Subscription and support revenue — the company's bread and butter — totaled 10.8 billion dollars, a figure that includes a 440 million dollar contribution from the recently integrated Informatica business.

The balance sheet shows plenty of fuel for the rally. Remaining performance obligations stood at 66.3 billion dollars, with the current portion (cRPO) at 33.5 billion dollars. Operating cash flow for the quarter reached 1.3 billion dollars, while free cash flow came in at 1.1 billion dollars — figures that underscore the durability of the company's subscription model.

A More Confident Outlook

Management used the occasion to lift its full-year guidance, signaling growing confidence in the trajectory of the business. Salesforce now expects fiscal 2027 revenue in the range of 46.1 billion to 46.4 billion dollars, with adjusted earnings per share projected between 16.67 and 16.71 dollars.

The company also raised its GAAP operating margin expectation for the current fiscal year to 20.1 percent, while the non-GAAP adjusted operating margin remains pegged at 34.3 percent. Guidance for operating cash flow and free cash flow growth — roughly 4 to 5 percent year over year — was reaffirmed without modification.

For the upcoming third quarter, the company is targeting revenue between 11.42 billion and 11.5 billion dollars, with adjusted earnings per share of 3.42 to 3.44 dollars. Informatica is expected to contribute just over four percentage points to revenue growth during that period, and slightly more than three percentage points for the full year.

The AI Story Takes Center Stage

Beyond the financials, the strategic narrative has shifted decisively toward artificial intelligence. Salesforce unveiled "Claudeforce," a deepened partnership with Anthropic that integrates the Claude family of AI models directly into the company's data repositories, workflows, and governance structures. The new plugin is designed to deliver advanced generative capabilities within the Salesforce ecosystem, and early pilot customers already have access. A broader open beta is slated for September 2026.

The company also expanded its Slack communications platform with new developer tools. Dubbed "Slack Code," the offering creates dedicated channels where AI-powered coding agents from partners including Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub, and Vercel can operate in a shared environment. The moves reflect a broader industry push among cloud providers to embed AI deeply into their platforms as a means of strengthening customer retention.

Analyst Reaction and the Road Ahead

Wall Street's response was swift, if measured. Tyler Radke at Citi lifted his price target on Salesforce from 187 to 204 dollars, though he maintained a neutral rating on the shares. The adjustment came just ahead of the detailed earnings release.

Salesforce at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The rally has narrowed the gap to the stock's 52-week high, which was set in October of last year. At current levels, Salesforce sits roughly 7 percent below that peak of 229.90 euros — a notable improvement from the double-digit deficit it carried into the report.

Meanwhile, the shareholder returns machine continues to hum. The company distributed 364 million dollars in dividends during the quarter and pressed on with its 25 billion dollar accelerated share repurchase program.

Not all institutional investors are sticking around, however. Soros Fund Management disclosed in mid-August that it had fully exited its Salesforce position during the second quarter, a data point that offers a counterweight to the otherwise bullish momentum.
