Rolls-Royce Licenses mtu Engine Production to Saudi Partner While Channeling £300 Million Into UK Sites

Rolls-Royce Power Systems has handed Saudi Arabia a slice of its marine engine business. The subsidiary signed a broad licensing agreement with Saudi Engines Manufacturing Company, known as Makeen, clearing the way for assembly and production of mtu 2000-series marine engines inside the kingdom. For the British group, it is the first time it has licensed local manufacturing of high-speed engines in Saudi Arabia.
The tie-up is aimed at building out in-country production capacity and cementing the brand's position in the Gulf's maritime sector. mtu engines are used internationally aboard commercial vessels, authority craft and large yachts, and the Makeen partnership lets Rolls-Royce serve rising regional demand for marine power directly from within the market.
£300 Million Spread Across Five UK Locations
On the home front, the company unveiled a £300 million investment program targeting aerospace and defense sites across the UK. Derby takes the single largest slice, with more than £140 million earmarked for the plant. The remaining £150 million-plus is divided among Bristol, Inchinnan, Rotherham and Ansty.
The spending is designed to reinforce manufacturing and engineering capacity in Rolls-Royce's home market, spanning both civil aviation and the defense arm. The goal is to broaden the industrial base at the British sites to support current and future engine programs.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rolls-Royce?
Research efforts are running alongside the plant upgrades. Rolls-Royce was selected to lead the European Clean Aviation ELEVATED project, a role it announced on September 18. That effort will demonstrate a hybrid-electric gas turbine propulsion system intended for future short- and medium-haul aircraft. The company is also taking part in the European FARMAN and H-ELENA initiatives.
Service Network Widens From Italy to Monaco
Power Systems has been busy on the service side as well. A remote monitoring center went live in Arcola, Italy on September 23, keeping watch over mtu engines installed on ships and in power generation plants. A day later, at the Monaco Yacht Show, the division rolled out a new bridge concept called "Point Break," part of the mtu NautIQ Bridge line for yachts.
Aviation Week reported on September 25 that European funding programs under the Clean Aviation initiative are backing upcoming ground tests of novel engine concepts at Rolls-Royce.
There was also a leadership-level transaction to note: non-executive board member Wendy Mars acquired additional ordinary shares on September 22 through the reinvestment of dividends.
Shares Hold Near August Peak
The stock continues to trade at elevated levels. On Thursday it closed at EUR 17.36, a daily gain of 1.9 percent. Since the start of the year the shares have added 32 percent, keeping them within striking distance of the 52-week high set in early August. By Friday the price stood at EUR 17.48, up 0.7 percent on the day, with the year-to-date advance at 33 percent.
Taken together, the marine licensing deal and the UK factory program show a group deliberately widening its business base — regionally and technologically — beyond its core civil aerospace engine franchise.
