The numbers from the second-quarter report, released a week and a half ago, were unambiguously strong. Revenue hit a record $234 million, up 62 percent year over year, while the backlog grew to $2.36 billion. During and after the quarter, Rocket Lab secured more than $1 billion in new business, including a $397 million Space Force contract for Flatellite spacecraft and a $266 million award covering up to 18 launch missions.

That last figure is worth pausing on. The Space Force contract is part of a broader expansion of the military's Phase 3 Lane 1 program, which was boosted by $11.4 billion to a total of $17 billion. Add in a $190 million Pentagon deal for hypersonic tests and Rocket Lab's role in the $981 million NITE-STAR program, and the picture becomes clear: the US government is structurally increasing its demand for commercial launch capacity, and Rocket Lab sits squarely in that flow.

The Neutron Clock Is Ticking

The market's skepticism, however, has little to do with any of this. The after-hours sell-off that followed the earnings release was triggered by a single sentence about the Neutron rocket. Management now targets delivering the vehicle to the launch pad in the fourth quarter of 2026 — but stopped short of confirming a first flight this year. Reuters and Bloomberg both reported that the more cautious language raises the risk that the maiden voyage slips into 2027.

For a company that has built its reputation on operational reliability, this is the one narrative thread that remains unresolved. Neutron is the proof point that Rocket Lab can graduate from the small-satellite niche into the realm of large constellations and major government programs. Every delay to that milestone postpones the story of the next growth leap — and the market is pricing in that uncertainty with remarkable precision.

A Launch Cadence That Keeps Humming

Meanwhile, the existing business continues to fire on all cylinders. Last week, Rocket Lab completed its 93rd Electron mission, carrying a QPS-SAR satellite for Japanese customer iQPS into a 575-kilometer low Earth orbit. It was the 14th Electron launch of 2026, with nine more dedicated iQPS missions booked through 2030. On August 15, eight of 17 satellite platforms built for MDA Space reached orbit as part of a $143 million contract for Globalstar's direct-to-device constellation.

The strategic ambition behind all this activity crystallized in late June, when Rocket Lab announced a definitive agreement to acquire Iridium Communications. CEO Peter Beck has been careful to frame the $8 billion deal not as a frontal assault on Starlink, but as a differentiated play built on Iridium's L-band spectrum — services that can penetrate buildings and withstand harsh weather. "Something that hasn't existed before," as he put it on Friday.

The timing is fortuitous. The White House signed a new national space memorandum on Friday aiming to enable more than 1,000 US launches per year by 2030 — the first fundamental policy overhaul since 2013. That political tailwind benefits the entire industry, of course, and Rocket Lab is hardly alone in enjoying it. SpaceX still dominated 2025 with 85 percent of all US orbital launches, and Chinese players like Landspace are advancing with reusable boosters.

The Financial Reality Check

The stock's recent behavior reflects a market caught between operational strength and strategic uncertainty. Since peaking at €133.80 in late May, shares have fallen 53 percent, though they remain 91 percent above their November low. The latest close of €62.40 came after a 10 percent weekly decline, with an RSI of 42.1 signaling neither oversold nor overbought — just indecision.

That indecision has a rational foundation. Free cash flow in the second quarter was deeply negative at minus $110.1 million. The Iridium acquisition, however promising strategically, ties up capital and won't close until mid-2027 — a long window in which much can change. And the company has created additional financial flexibility through a new at-the-market equity sale agreement that took effect August 13, allowing issuances of up to nearly $1.94 billion.

The market's split personality is visible in the data: annualized volatility of 78 percent and short interest of 8.65 percent of the float. Hedge funds like Marshall Wace have increased their positions by over 1,200 percent, while a substantial cohort of investors remains firmly bearish.

Until Neutron has a concrete launch date, this standoff is unlikely to resolve itself. Rocket Lab has proven its core business can grow and attract capital — the question is whether that translates into the next major leap. The answer won't be found on a balance sheet, but on a launch pad.
