Rocket Lab's stock slipped 3.3% to EUR 58.90 on Monday, a move that market watchers could not tie to any single company-specific catalyst. The pullback nonetheless extends a bruising stretch for shareholders: at that level, the shares sit roughly 56% below their 52-week high of EUR 133.80, reached in May.

Part of the drag traces back to a Friday note from TD Cowen. Analyst Gautam Khanna trimmed his price target on the stock from $120 to $90 while keeping his "Buy" rating intact — a cut of a quarter that landed as part of a broader sector preview ahead of third-quarter results for aerospace, defense and space names. Even at the reduced target, Khanna pointed to remaining upside from current valuation levels.

A Record Commercial Contract

The operational story has been brighter. On September 30, Rocket Lab signed a multi-year agreement with Synspective covering 20 Electron launches — the largest single commercial contract ever booked for the Electron vehicle. Deals of that kind lock in long-term utilization for the small-launch program and underscore demand for dedicated rideshare alternatives.

Confidence in the longer arc is not limited to commercial partners. Barclays initiated coverage of the stock with an "Overweight" rating and an $85 price target, signaling that several institutions see room for appreciation despite near-term volatility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?

Neutron Hardware Arrives in Virginia

Meanwhile, Rocket Lab's medium-lift ambitions are moving from the drawing board to the launch pad. The "Hungry Hippo" payload fairing for the Neutron rocket has arrived at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, Virginia.

The 14-meter carbon-fiber structure stays permanently attached to the first stage during flight, opens to release the upper stage and then closes again for the return journey. At Launch Complex 3, the fairing will now undergo final testing. Rocket Lab is targeting delivery of the rocket to the pad in the fourth quarter of 2026 — an ambitious schedule given an earlier setback during a pressure test of the fuel tank.

With a planned payload capacity of 13,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, Neutron is positioned to fill the gap that a gradual retirement of SpaceX's Falcon 9 could leave in the satellite launch market. Early bookings are already on the books, including a mission for communications provider Kepler starting in 2028.

The Lunar Race as a Tailwind

The strategic backdrop is sharpening. NASA administrator Jared Isaacman warned that the United States and China are separated by "months, not years" in the race to return astronauts to the Moon. Beijing is targeting a crewed landing by 2029, while NASA plans its own step for late 2028. For the lunar base program, estimated at around $30 billion, the agency is weighing clustered rocket launches. With SpaceX limiting new dedicated Falcon 9 bookings after 2028, alternative launch systems are drawing closer scrutiny from space planners.

Backlog and Cash Burn

Commercially, Rocket Lab leans on a strong foundation in its legacy launch and space components business. Total backlog stood at a record $2.36 billion at the end of the second quarter, up 137% year over year. Launch services alone accounted for roughly $940 million of that figure.

Rocket Lab at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The expansion, however, consumes substantial capital: free cash flow outflow reached about $110 million in the second quarter, while third-quarter revenue guidance sits between $250 million and $265 million.

Institutional buyers have used the recent weakness to add exposure. Cathie Wood's ARK bought close to 1.3 million shares in several tranches between late August and early October.

On the leadership side, CFO Adam C. Spice sold company stock, according to a filed Form 4 disclosure. Attention now turns to the upcoming third-quarter report, which will need to deliver fresh evidence on financial momentum and the ramp-up of future projects — and to whether the test schedule in Virginia holds, since it determines the timing of Neutron's first flight.
