The numbers tell a story of a company that has learned to walk on two legs at once. Rocket Lab has spent the past quarter collecting government contracts, launching satellites for loyal commercial clients, and plotting an $8 billion acquisition — all while its share price swings with the violence of a rocket re-entering the atmosphere. When the company reports second-quarter earnings after the US market close today, investors will be looking for one thing above all: evidence that the growth story can finally outrun the skepticism.

That skepticism has a price tag. Despite a Friday rally that lifted the stock 8.65 percent to close at EUR 71.60, and a weekly gain of roughly 17 percent, shares remain more than 46 percent below their 52-week high of EUR 133.80. The 200-day moving average at EUR 67.64 sits just 5.85 percent beneath the current price, a reminder of how quickly the narrative can flip.

From Launch Provider to Defense Contractor

The transformation underway at Rocket Lab is no longer theoretical. On August 4, the US Space Force awarded the company a USD 397 million contract under the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program. Rocket Lab will develop, launch, and operate multiple "Flatellite" spacecraft — launched on the unproven Neutron rocket and run from the company's own secure facilities. This is a fundamental shift in what Rocket Lab sells: not just transportation to orbit, but the satellites themselves and the infrastructure to operate them.

The commercial side of the business shows the same pattern of deepening relationships. On Thursday, an Electron rocket lifted off from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand, carrying the Japanese radar satellite QPS-SAR-13 for Earth-observation specialist iQPS into a circular orbit at 575 kilometers. It marked the 92nd Electron mission and the eighth for iQPS alone. Late July brought three more dedicated missions with the Japanese client, with ten additional launches booked through 2030.

The Iridium Gambit

The June announcement of the Iridium Communications acquisition dwarfs any single contract. Rocket Lab agreed to pay USD 54 per share in a mix of cash and stock, valuing the satellite communications provider at roughly USD 8.0 billion. Iridium shareholders receive USD 27.00 in cash plus Rocket Lab shares, with the exchange ratio capped within a band between USD 67.50 and USD 112.50. The deal is expected to close in mid-2027, pending shareholder and regulatory approvals.

When a company takes on an $8 billion acquisition and a government contract in the same quarter, the pressure to document every operational risk multiplies. The same discipline that keeps a rocket program on schedule applies to workplace safety — and the paperwork can be overwhelming. Should the transaction go through, Rocket Lab completes its metamorphosis from rocket manufacturer to vertically integrated space and communications conglomerate. The SB-AMTI contract already pointed in that direction; Iridium would cement it.

The Neutron Question

None of this matters without Neutron. The new heavy-lift rocket, designed to compete directly with SpaceX's Falcon 9, is expected to make its maiden flight in the coming quarters. A successful test of the Archimedes engine at NASA Stennis was an encouraging milestone, but the rocket remains unflown. The government backlog — including the Space Force contract — depends on Neutron performing on schedule.

That dependency is baked into the valuation. With a market capitalization of EUR 35.11 billion, Rocket Lab trades far above what current revenue justifies. The annualized 30-day volatility of 87.15 percent tells its own story about how speculative this price level has become. A 14-day RSI of 55.9 suggests neither overheating nor weakness — a neutral-positive technical posture that could go either way.

Insider Sales and the 22 Percent Drop

The company's own guidance for the second quarter calls for revenue between USD 225 and 240 million, a GAAP gross margin of 33 to 35 percent, and operating expenses between USD 138 and 144 million. Consensus estimates sit at roughly USD 231.6 million in revenue — an increase of about 60 percent year over year.

Yet the same 90-day period that brought this contract windfall also saw insiders sell approximately USD 896 million worth of stock, led by CEO Peter Beck's planned selling programs. These sales coincided with a 22.3 percent post-earnings decline in the share price after the previous quarterly report. Whether that represents a red flag or simply the mechanics of executive compensation is one of the questions today's report may help answer.

A Market Awaiting Proof

The market has recently chosen the optimistic interpretation. Friday's 8.65 percent jump came on the heels of the Space Force announcement, and the weekly gain of nearly 17 percent shows momentum building. But the distance to the 52-week high — and the even starker gap to the 52-week low of EUR 32.60, which sits 120.25 percent below the current price — reveals how much perfection is already priced in.

Rocket Lab has positioned itself as the most reliable alternative for customers uncertain about SpaceX's rideshare program and United Launch Alliance's Vulcan-Centaur pause. The strategy is working on the order book. Whether it works on the income statement is the question tonight's numbers will begin to answer.
