Shares in Rheinmetall came under selling pressure on Monday, falling 3.8% to EUR 1,048.80 as reports of a possible easing in the Ukraine conflict rippled through the European defence sector. The trigger was a mix of diplomatic signals: Washington temporarily suspended sanctions against Russia, while Vladimir Putin indicated interest in a summit with the US and China.

The pullback lands just days after the stock had rallied 5.4% on Friday to close at EUR 1,090.20 — a level 3.7% above its 50-day moving average of EUR 1,051.64. That earlier advance had been driven by the opposite dynamic, with media reports pointing to renewed investor interest in European defence names after Reuters reported a Ukrainian strike on a Russian refinery following the end of an energy truce.

A Sell-Off That May Be Overdone

The reflexive flight from defence stocks looks short-sighted. Years of underinvestment in European armed forces cannot be undone by vague diplomatic gestures, and demand for defence equipment is likely to stay elevated for years. NATO procurement follows long-term budget plans, not day-to-day sentiment.

Still, the market mood has cooled noticeably. Rheinmetall shares are down 32% since the start of the year, a re-rating partly driven by growing caution among analysts. Berenberg cut its rating from "Buy" to "Hold" roughly two weeks ago and trimmed its price target from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020, citing uncertainty over medium-term growth prospects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Financing Firepower Doubled

Against that scepticism, the Düsseldorf group has moved to strengthen its balance sheet. On 8 October Rheinmetall renewed its existing syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule and doubled the volume from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The new facility replaces the previous agreement and is available for general corporate purposes, giving the company substantial flexibility for its investment plans.

Capacity expansion is proceeding in parallel. At its Spanish site in Albacete, subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions recently commissioned a new production line for medium-calibre ammunition. The roughly EUR 20 million investment creates capacity for 1.2 million projectiles and about 1.8 million cartridge cases per year. The line is designed for an annual output of around three million medium-calibre components, aimed at meeting rising demand from European armed forces.

US Push and Hydrogen Side-Bets

Beyond Europe, the company is deepening its US footprint. On 12 October subsidiary American Rheinmetall presented new technologies for the future US Army at the AUSA 2026 defence trade fair, positioning its system solutions for upcoming US procurement programmes. The US defence market is viewed as a strategic pillar of the group's international expansion.

Rheinmetall is also broadening its reach beyond purely military programmes. On 13 October the company signed a non-binding letter of intent with Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA to examine the technical and commercial feasibility of decentralised production of renewable fuels. Separately, Bloomberg reported that Rheinmetall has acquired a small stake in Rock Tech Lithium's converter project; Rock Tech had previously announced a private placement worth CAD 6 million.

What Comes Next

Clarity on the operating picture will arrive soon. Rheinmetall is scheduled to publish its financial results for the third quarter of 2026 on 5 November 2026. Weighing the real order book against the geopolitical headlines, the long-term case appears to outweigh the short-term setbacks.
