Rheinmetall's Transatlantic Push Collides With a Brutal Share-Price Reality

Rheinmetall delivers on US contracts yet shares fall 11% in a month; trimmed 2026 guidance and delivery delays weigh on sentiment.

The defence contractor's American expansion strategy is firing on all cylinders — yet the market response has been anything but enthusiastic. Over the past week alone, Rheinmetall has delivered the first Lynx-XM30 prototype to the US Army, secured a machining contract from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace tied to the MCT-30 turret programme for the ACV-30 vehicle, and shipped replacement components for mobile ground launchers to the US Navy. American Rheinmetall is clearly executing on its transatlantic ambitions.

That operational momentum, however, stands in stark contrast to the stock's trajectory. Shares closed Monday at €1,023.00, down 1.1 percent on the day, leaving the equity roughly 11 percent lower over a 30-day stretch. The slide extends a painful drawdown that has erased about a third of the company's value since the start of the year and nearly half since the October peak of €2,007.00 — a 52-week high that now feels like a distant memory. At current levels, the stock trades well below its 200-day moving average of €1,394.54.

A Trimmed Outlook Complicates the Narrative

The market's scepticism is not without foundation. Rheinmetall has pared back its 2026 revenue guidance to a range of €13.7 billion to €14.2 billion, having previously signalled higher sales. Management is holding firm on the operational margin at roughly 19 percent, but the message to investors is unmistakable: profitability stays intact even as growth decelerates from original plans.

The third quarter added further strain. Operating free cash flow turned sharply negative, which the company attributes to deferred advance payments, elevated customer receivables from heavy end-of-quarter revenue recognition, and deliberate inventory build-up ahead of coming quarters. Those mechanics may be explainable, but they do little to soothe nerves in a market already on edge.

Delivery Delays and Quality Questions

Media reports citing internal documents from the Bundeswehr and the federal procurement office point to slippage on two flagship programmes. The "Schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie" armoured wheeled vehicle is said to be running at least eleven months behind its contractual schedule. On the Skyranger air-defence tank, originally slated for delivery starting mid-2026, serial production is now reportedly not beginning until mid-2027 — though Rheinmetall contests the figure, acknowledging only a five-month delay.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Reports of potential quality deficiencies in protective plates produced within the group's orbit have added to the negative headlines. The accumulation of adverse news is intensifying pressure on CEO Armin Papperger's leadership, even as the order book tells a more encouraging story.

Record Backlog Offers a Counterweight

The second quarter saw the order backlog surpass €80 billion, bolstered by new contract nominations worth €11.371 billion. That cushion underscores the group's operational substance, and recent wins reinforce the point. The Bundeswehr has placed an order exceeding €500 million for additional mobile rescue stations, pushing the total to 165 systems with a gross value north of €600 million.

Domestically, Rheinmetall is investing more than €260 million in expanding its tank plant in Kassel, while the technology centre in Neuss has been flagged as a potential jobs engine tied to site expansion. The company is clearly building capacity at home and abroad simultaneously.

Political Milestones Loom

The Boxer vehicle project "Arminius" remains a focal point on the political front. Papperger has indicated that final negotiations are slated for the second week of September, with parliamentary consideration scheduled for December 9. The planned fixed contract covers roughly €12.4 billion for vehicles with delivery through 2029, supplemented by a service agreement carrying a €2 billion share for Rheinmetall. Given the scale, the share price is likely to react sensitively to any development ahead of such a landmark award.

Not every political outcome has favoured the group. Rheinmetall lost the multibillion-euro F126 frigate project for late 2026 after Germany halted the programme, originally valued at €12.8 billion, opting instead for smaller vessels from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Analyst Divergence and Upcoming Catalysts

The investment community is split on where the stock goes from here. On Wednesday, mwb research upgraded its rating from "Sell" to "Hold," keeping a price target of €1,050 — barely above the current trading level. Just a day earlier, Deutsche Bank Research had issued a far more bullish assessment with a target of €1,800, underscoring the wide dispersion in expectations.

Rheinmetall will have opportunities to make its case in the coming days, appearing at Morgan Stanley's "Industrial CEOs unplugged" event on Tuesday and the Jefferies Industrials Conference on Wednesday. Both forums should give investors a closer look at strategic priorities, particularly regarding the recent US contract wins and the broader international expansion.

The central tension — whether fundamental progress will eventually translate into share-price recovery — is likely to dominate those conversations. The company's third-quarter results on November 5 will provide the next hard data point on whether the trimmed guidance holds up. For now, Rheinmetall presents an unusual picture: a contractor executing on multiple fronts, holding a record backlog, yet watching its market value erode week after week.
