Rheinmetall's Summer Rally Unravels as Political Crosswinds Meet Delivery Delays

Rheinmetall shares fall 9.9% in 30 days amid political uncertainty, delivery delays, and trimmed guidance, despite strong order backlog.

The defence contractor's shares have surrendered nearly all of their late-summer gains, with a 9.9 percent decline over the past 30 days underscoring just how quickly sentiment has soured. Tuesday's modest uptick — the stock edged 0.8 percent higher to EUR 1,031.40, building on Monday's close of EUR 1,023.00 — does little to mask the deeper pressures accumulating around the Düsseldorf-based group.

A Political Overhang With Multiple Fronts

The immediate catalyst for investor caution stems from last weekend's election result in Saxony-Anhalt, where the success of the AfD has reignited debates over the future trajectory of German defence spending. Analysts are now advising clients to adopt a wait-and-see stance rather than committing fresh capital, arguing that the political framework needs to clarify before reliable forecasts can be made.

Adding to the uncertainty is a broader discussion about whether non-traditional players could enter the defence manufacturing space. Speculation that Volkswagen's industrial capacity might be redirected toward armaments production has caught the attention of Rheinmetall watchers, who see potential intensification of competitive pressure as a genuine risk to the company's market position.

The timing is awkward. Berlin's parliamentary calendar this week includes the introduction of the 2027 budget draft, forcing defence-related questions onto the legislative agenda at precisely the moment investors are seeking clarity on procurement commitments.

Delivery Schedules Slip on Key Programmes

Beyond the political noise, operational concerns are mounting. Media reports citing internal documents from the Bundeswehr and the federal procurement office point to significant delays on two major projects. The "Schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie" armoured vehicle programme is reportedly running at least eleven months behind its contractual schedule, while serial production of the Skyranger air defence tank — originally slated to begin deliveries in mid-2026 — is now not expected to start until mid-2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Rheinmetall contests these figures, acknowledging only a roughly five-month delay on the Skyranger. Reports of potential quality issues with protective plates manufactured within the group's orbit have further muddied the narrative, heaping additional scrutiny on chief executive Armin Papperger's leadership.

The share price reflects the strain. Trading nearly half below its 52-week high of EUR 2,007.00 reached in October, the stock has shed roughly a third of its value since the start of the year and sits well beneath its 200-day moving average of EUR 1,394.54.

Guidance Trimmed, Margins Defended

The company's own financial guidance has added to the gloom. Rheinmetall now projects 2026 revenues of between EUR 13.7 billion and EUR 14.2 billion — a downward revision from earlier expectations. Management has, however, held firm on its operational margin target of approximately 19 percent, signalling that profitability should remain intact even as growth moderates.

Last quarter's operational free cash flow proved a further drag, turning distinctly negative. Management attributes the shortfall to deferred advance payments, elevated customer receivables tied to strong end-of-quarter revenue recognition, and deliberate inventory building for upcoming quarters.

The Order Book Tells a Different Story

For all the near-term turbulence, the group's underlying commercial momentum remains formidable. The order backlog surpassed EUR 80 billion in the second quarter, bolstered by new order nominations totalling EUR 11.371 billion. That cushion underscores the operational substance beneath the share price volatility.

Recent contract wins reinforce the picture. The Bundeswehr has placed an order worth more than EUR 500 million for additional mobile rescue stations, lifting the total to 165 systems with a gross value exceeding EUR 600 million. Across the Atlantic, American Rheinmetall has delivered the first of eight Lynx XM30 prototypes to the US Army. Domestically, the group is investing over EUR 260 million in expanding its Kassel tank plant in northern Hesse.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A December Date With Destiny

Attention now pivots to the "Arminius" Boxer armoured vehicle project, a potential landmark deal that could reshape the narrative. Papperger has indicated that final negotiations are scheduled for the second week of September, with parliamentary consideration set for December 9. The planned fixed-price contract covers approximately EUR 12.4 billion for vehicles with deliveries running through 2029, supplemented by a service agreement carrying a EUR 2 billion share attributable to Rheinmetall.

Given the scale of what is at stake, the stock is likely to react sharply to any development — positive or negative — in the coming weeks. The group also faces the loss of the F126 frigate programme, a project originally valued at EUR 12.8 billion that Germany has scrapped in favour of smaller vessels from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

The next major inflection point arrives on November 5, when Rheinmetall releases its third-quarter results. Whether the revised guidance holds will depend on execution across the coming months — and on whether the political and operational headwinds currently buffeting the stock begin to ease. For investors weighing the intact defence growth story against the immediate uncertainty, the sidelines may remain the most comfortable vantage point for now.
