Rheinmetall shares closed Friday at EUR 1,090.20, up 5.4%, as a broad recovery in European defense names lifted the sector rather than any single company catalyst. The advance pushed the stock above its 50-day moving average of EUR 1,051.64 — and, notably, back above the EUR 1,020 price target that Berenberg set just over a week ago when it downgraded the shares.

The Munich-based group's gains came amid growing doubts over future U.S. military support for Ukraine and a Brussels meeting between European leaders and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to Reuters. Morgan Stanley added to the momentum by suggesting that further orders could be placed from defense budgets toward the end of the year. Market participants read the geopolitical debate as a signal that European buyers will have to accelerate procurement programs over the medium term.

New Mid-Caliber Line in Albacete

On the operational front, Rheinmetall's Expal Munitions subsidiary has commissioned a new mid-caliber production facility at its Spanish site in Albacete. The plant is designed for an annual output of roughly 1.2 million shells and about 1.8 million cartridge cases, a capacity the company describes as high-volume. The expansion is meant to ease existing bottlenecks in defense supplies and strengthen the group's industrial base, extending its mid-caliber manufacturing footprint on a lasting basis.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Funding for that build-out got a boost on October 8, when Rheinmetall renewed its syndicated credit line ahead of schedule and doubled the facility from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The move gives the group more financial headroom for capital investment in production equipment.

Berenberg Steps Back, Citing Life After 2030

The more cautious note came from Berenberg, which cut its rating to "Hold" from "Buy" and lowered its price target to EUR 1,020 from EUR 1,600, pointing to uncertainty over revenue development beyond 2030. Friday's rally has already carried the stock past that new target.

Internationally, Rheinmetall Defence Australia agreed to supply the containerized AERIE air-defense system for countering unmanned aerial vehicles, and demonstrated networked vehicle systems with partners on the Boxer CRV wheeled armored vehicle. A Bundeswehr joint venture also secured exclusive access to space-based reconnaissance satellites under the SPOCK-1 program.

Despite the week's rebound, the stock is still down 30% since the start of the year. Whether it can build on the recent recovery will depend heavily on order intake and upcoming performance figures. Rheinmetall is scheduled to publish its third-quarter 2026 report on November 5, 2026, when investors will see how far strong demand and the ramp-up of new capacity are feeding through to the group's financials.
