Rheinmetall's Spanish Shell Line Comes Online as Investors Await the Order Book's Verdict
Published on 10/17/2026 at 06:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deRheinmetall shares jumped 5.4% to EUR 1,090.20 on Friday — with a second reading putting the advance at 5.6% to EUR 1,092.60 — as a sector-wide recovery lifted European defence names and the Düsseldorf group switched on a new ammunition line in Spain. There was no company-specific trigger behind the size of the move; rivals climbed alongside it.
The rally's roots lie in geopolitics and budget arithmetic. Media reports of mounting doubts over continued US support for Ukraine gave European defence stocks fresh momentum, and accounts of scrapped agreements on sparing energy infrastructure pushed the sector back into the spotlight. Morgan Stanley added ballast, with dpa-AFX citing the US bank's expectation that more awards will flow from the current federal budget before year-end — a seasonal tailwind for the industry.
Three million components a year from Albacete
On the operational side, Rheinmetall's Expal Munitions subsidiary commissioned new medium-calibre production at its Spanish site in Albacete, investing roughly EUR 20 million. The line is designed for an annual capacity of about 1.2 million projectiles and some 1.8 million cartridge cases — around three million components in total — strengthening the group's European industrial base against persistently strong ammunition demand.
Across the Atlantic, the US subsidiary American Rheinmetall showed combat vehicle, air-defence and autonomous systems at the AUSA defence fair, aimed at modernising the US armed forces. No concrete new orders were announced.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
A EUR 1.5 billion cushion for the year-end sprint
Management has also bought itself room to pre-finance and expand. The syndicated credit facility was recently doubled from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. RBC Capital Markets kept a positive rating with a EUR 1,600 price target, pointing to intact operating momentum in the sector.
The bull case rests on orders converting into contracts. Should the Federal Ministry of Defence steer major procurement proposals through the Bundestag before year-end, visibility on medium-term targets would improve markedly, with the expected order for the Arminius weapon system a key domestic driver. A successful bid for the US XM30 infantry fighting vehicle programme — valued at close to USD 35 billion — would open the world's largest defence market.
Berenberg's caution and the 2027 budget hurdle
Not everyone is convinced. Berenberg downgraded Rheinmetall to "Hold" about a week ago, flagging uncertainty over long-term growth prospects beyond 2030, and cut its price target to EUR 1,020. Roughly two weeks earlier, the company had reported the start of series production of SAR reconnaissance satellites.
The bear case centres on political and budgetary logjams. Approval of the draft 2027 federal budget is still outstanding; protracted talks or trimmed line items could delay major orders. Washington's debate over possible cuts to US military aid for Ukraine shows how fragile state commitments can be — should political backing for large aid packages fade, European governments might reshuffle priorities rather than accelerate procurement. Intense international competition adds pressure: a miss on US tenders such as XM30, or thinner margins on new ammunition contracts under sustained cost pressure, would weigh on the valuation.
A political pledge of higher defence spending no longer satisfies markets after months of losses. Investors want firm orders that underwrite nominal growth; without signatures in the final quarter, the recovery lacks a fundamental base.
Despite Friday's surge, the stock is still down 30% since the start of the year. The next hard data point is already circled: Rheinmetall reports third-quarter results on 5 November 2026, and the interim statement should show how the order backlog and utilisation of the expanded plants are feeding through to revenue. A capital markets day later in November will follow, with management expected to quantify the chances of a strong year-end finish.
