Rheinmetall's Quiet Order Stream Highlights the Gap Between Operations and Valuation

The defence group's share price has spent the past month absorbing a cut to its full-year revenue outlook, yet the operational pipeline keeps filling up with smaller, steadier wins that tell a different story from the one playing out on the trading screen.

Fresh off a €270 million commitment to expand its Kassel site into a logistics and drone-testing hub, Rheinmetall has secured a first call-off under the German Armed Forces Contractor Augmentation Program II for a modular camp in Lithuania. The order, confirmed by the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Services, covers static troop accommodation and adds another layer to the company's growing role as a logistics provider along NATO's eastern flank.

That contract sits alongside a more substantial piece of business: a Bundeswehr extension for mobile rescue stations worth more than €500 million gross. The additional 149 protected and unprotected systems are scheduled to enter production in the first quarter of 2027. Taken together, the Lithuanian camp and the medical infrastructure work signal a deliberate broadening of Rheinmetall's footprint beyond armoured vehicle manufacturing into field logistics and casualty care — segments that offer multi-year revenue visibility.

The Kassel development, unveiled with the planned "North Hesse Defence Hub," ties into the same strategy. By the end of 2027, the site will host a logistics centre at Kassel Airport and a drone testing facility, alongside expanded tank production. The state of Hesse is backing the project.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Investors, however, have yet to reward the news flow. The shares slipped 1.4 percent on the Kassel announcement, a muted reaction that reflects the lingering overhang from the guidance revision on 6 August. Rheinmetall now expects 2026 revenue of €13.7 billion to €14.2 billion, down from the previous range of €14.0 billion to €14.5 billion, after the German F126 frigate program fell away. The stock has drifted a further 1.2 percent since, suggesting the market has largely priced in the new numbers.

The analyst community remains split on where the shares go from here. Kepler Cheuvreux trimmed its price target to €1,924 on 17 August following the second-quarter results, while keeping a buy recommendation. mwb research, by contrast, downgraded the stock to "Sell" on 8 August with a target of €1,050, and reaffirmed that stance on 19 August, pointing to a gap between consensus expectations and the order intake needed by fiscal 2028. JPMorgan also confirmed a neutral rating that same day without issuing a fresh target.

The stock closed Friday at €1,152.40, down 2.1 percent on the day but still up 2.5 percent for the week. Year-to-date, the shares have lost 26 percent, leaving them 43 percent below the 52-week high set in early October.

What emerges is a two-speed picture. On the operational side, Rheinmetall keeps delivering orders — modest in size but consistent in cadence — that underpin its long-term growth story. On the valuation side, the market is clearly questioning whether the company can replace the scale of the lost frigate program with these smaller, diversified wins.

Management had the chance to address that question directly at the DZ Bank expert day in Bremen on Thursday, 27 August, where the mid-term growth trajectory following the guidance cut was expected to be a central topic. The recent flurry of contract announcements — from Lithuania to Kassel to the rescue stations — suggests the company believes it has an answer. Whether investors will accept it is another matter entirely.
