Rheinmetall's second guidance cut in three months has put a date on investors' calendars: 27 November, when the defence group holds its capital markets day.

The Düsseldorf-based group now expects 2026 revenue of around EUR 13.2bn, down from a previous range of EUR 13.7–14.2bn. The shortfall traces back to probable delays in the award of the Boxer Arminius project and in lot acceptances for artillery ammunition, with revenue shifts in the weapons-and-ammunition business adding to the gap. Advance payments and revenue contributions tied to those contracts are now expected to land in 2027.

Profitability guidance moved in tandem. Rheinmetall trimmed its expected operating margin for the full year to roughly 18.5% from about 19%.

A strong nine months, priced for perfection

The cut landed against a backdrop of otherwise forceful growth. Revenue for the first nine months of 2026 reached EUR 8.4bn, up 38% year on year, while operating profit climbed 69% to EUR 1.339m. The operating margin over that stretch came in at 16.0%.

Those figures were published in Wednesday's interim report — the same day the annual outlook was lowered. The stock fell 12% yesterday in response.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

The gap between the two sets of numbers is the heart of the matter. Rheinmetall is not short of demand; it is short of signed orders and accepted deliveries on schedule. Whether the deferred revenue actually arrives in 2027 is now the single variable that matters most to the equity story.

Brokers split three ways

The sell-side response has been anything but uniform. Bernstein downgraded Rheinmetall to "Market-Perform" from "Outperform" and cut its price target to EUR 1,000 from EUR 1,200. Oddo BHF moved to "Neutral" from "Outperform," reducing its target to EUR 1,200 from EUR 1,670. JPMorgan, already at "Neutral," lowered its target to EUR 1,150 from EUR 1,350, with analyst David Perry pointing to the company's repeated profit warnings and keeping his caution about further negative share-price catalysts.

Not everyone retreated. Several analysts maintained their buy ratings even after the target reductions, with price targets of EUR 1,453 and EUR 1,750.

The dispersion tells its own story: the bulls are underwriting execution on the shifted contracts, while the sceptics are asking how much credibility a second warning in three months leaves intact.

The CEO is buying

One signal cuts against the cautious mood. CEO Armin Theodor Papperger acquired Rheinmetall shares via Xetra yesterday, in an aggregate total of EUR 502,484.40. Insider purchases of that size are rarely incidental, though they carry most weight when paired with evidence that the delayed business is actually being converted into revenue.

What the capital markets day must deliver

JPMorgan flagged the 27 November capital markets day as a possible trigger for a fresh review of Rheinmetall's longer-term corporate targets — a date the company itself has already announced.

For investors, the questions are concrete. Can management bound the timing slippage on Arminius and the artillery munitions lots? Do the adjusted revenue and margin targets hold? And do the deferred advance payments arrive as promised, or does the cash inflow slip again?

A credible answer would let the market read the guidance cut as a timing issue rather than a structural one, and the 38% top-line growth as the more durable fact. Another delay would do the opposite, shifting the debate from how fast Rheinmetall can grow to whether its planning can be relied upon at all.
