Rheinmetall's NanoLam Grant and Mercedes-Benz UK Pact Anchor a Sprawling Defense Push

Rheinmetall broadens its defense footprint with a German subsidy, a UK land-vehicle alliance, a US Army order and its first satellite in orbit.

Rheinmetall's week has been defined less by any single headline than by the sheer breadth of its industrial footprint. Between a German manufacturing subsidy, a British land-vehicle alliance, a U.S. Army production order and a satellite now circling overhead, the Düsseldorf-based defense group is steadily widening its portfolio well past the heavy armor and ammunition that built its reputation.

The stock entered the new week at EUR 966.60, up 0.7 percent, though it remains 38 percent lower since the start of the year. Friday's session had closed at EUR 959.80, a daily gain of 1.0 percent.

A Subsidy for the Component Layer

On September 22, subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology secured roughly EUR 1.5 million in public funding for the production of NanoLam™ capacitors at its Hartha site. The project carries a total investment volume of more than EUR 4.4 million. It is a small line item against Rheinmetall's broader balance sheet, but it speaks to a deliberate push into electronic specialty components — networked systems, satellite-based reconnaissance and sensor hardware that increasingly complement the group's traditional land-systems business.

That same logic runs through Rheinmetall's participation in NATO's REPMUS26 exercise in Portugal on September 21, where the company tested networked unmanned systems for maritime protection missions. A containerized system served Germany's navy as a deployable operations center during the drills. A separate framework agreement covers the repair and technical support of LNG customs vessels while they remain in service.

Telford, Skoppum and a British Supply Chain

In the United Kingdom, Rheinmetall UK sealed a cooperation with Mercedes-Benz UK for the British Army's Land Mobility Programme. The alliance, operating under the name Team Wolf, selected Telford as its vehicle integration site and is targeting a British value-added share of up to 50 percent. Rheinmetall UK also strengthened domestic testing capacity with a new vibration test rig at the same location.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Nordic operations moved forward in parallel. Rheinmetall Nordic opened a facility in Skoppum, Norway, spanning 4,579 square meters and designed for 127 employees. The workshop and test floors there are intended to secure long-term lifecycle support for the region.

From Alabama to Low Earth Orbit

Across the Atlantic, American Rheinmetall picked up a U.S. Army contract worth USD 20.7 million — about EUR 18.05 million — to manufacture 3,104 new MK93 Enhanced Softmount systems, alongside modernization work on 245 existing mounts. Deliveries run through October 2027. Orders of this kind lock in utilization rates at specialized production sites for years and reward the group's ability to ship standardized assemblies in large batches to major customers.

Higher still, Rheinmetall Italia — working with partner Argotec — placed its first satellite into orbit for military air-defense surveillance. A second satellite is slated to follow in 2028. The company's stated aim is to link early-warning and reconnaissance capabilities directly into military command systems.

Insiders Buy, Berenberg Stays Bullish

Confidence signals arrived from the top. CEO Armin Papperger purchased shares worth an aggregate EUR 498,947.80 on September 29. The Sara Georgi Stiftung, an entity close to the supervisory board, acquired stock for EUR 238,706.60. Such insider purchases are widely read by the market as a vote of confidence in the company's fundamental condition.

Analyst coverage remains constructive. According to media reports, Chris Armstrong of Berenberg reaffirmed a price target of EUR 1,600 on September 25.

The next hard data point comes on November 5, 2026, when Rheinmetall publishes its third-quarter report. For investors, the question is how quickly the group can ramp up its new sites — and whether production keeps pace with the delivery deadlines it has already signed up to.
